Salado ISD is member of 6-district coop
Our school district is a member of the Bell County Special Education Cooperative. The six school districts that participate in this Coop are Academy, Bartlett, Holland, Rogers, Salado and Troy. Students with significant disabilities can continue to qualify to attend public school until they are 22 years of age. A few years ago, we started an 18+ program for students with intellectual disabilities that are between 18 and 22 years of age. The mission of this program is to provide these students the life skills and employment skills to live as independently as possible after they graduate from high school. We currently have ten students attending this program.
This program was originally housed at Salado High School. Last year our school district purchased a home on Salado School Road and moved the program there. We did this in order to get the program into a real residential setting and because we are running out of space at the high school as our enrollment continues to increase every year.
The house is the home base for these students and it is where they learn skills needed to live independently such as cooking, cleaning, budgeting, and maintaining a home. The students get out into the community to gain employment skills at job sites. The students also learn how to shop for food at the grocery store and order food at restaurants. They run a print shop at the house to learn job skills and to earn money to help pay for some of their field trips in the community. The 18+ print shop creates and copies high quality flyers, invitations, announcements, business cards, and other documents for a very reasonable price.
We have five dedicated and caring employees that work in this program:
Sherry Ayres, teacher/job coach
Christopher Jacque, classroom aide
Nikki Jackson, classroom aide
Tracie McAdams, classroom aide
Julia Serna, Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN)
