Despite recent losses, ladies look to playoffs
Salado Lady Eagles could not handle the #3 Jarrell Lady Cougars’ 6’4” senior post Brienne Coffman or the speed of 5’7” guard Nemec, who combined for 37 of the hosting Cougars’ 68 points.
The 68-29 loss on Jan. 29 gave the Lady Eagles their third district loss, but with just two games left in district play, Salado looks to be playoff bound.
Jarrell jumped out to an early lead of 12-4 in the first four minutes of the game and never looked back, converting three steals into quick baskets.
The Lady Cougars held a 24-6 first quarter lead, stretching it to 42-16 at the half. Jarrell led by 30 points after the third period, 53-23 before adding 15 points in the fourth.
Jaylee Sebek led Salado with 10 points, six coming in the fourth quarter.
Ashley Adams followed with 7 points and senior Meredith Ward had 6 points in the game. Also scoring for Salado were Taylor Atwood, 4 points and Carmela Perez, 2 points.
All eight of the Jarrell players scored, but Coffman and Nemec did the lion’s share of the work for the Cougars. Coffman had 19 points, 16 of them in the first half. Nemec had 18 points, 13 in the first half.
Also scoring for Jarrell were Brianna Wright, 8 points, Jessica Garcia, 8 points, Abby Hage, 6 points, Margaret Sukup, 5 points, Leslie Hansson and Krista Nelson, 2 points each.

Salado Lady Eagles lost a district game 39-41 in overtime to Lexington Jan. 22.
Salado Lady Eagles led 11-4 in the first quarter and scored 13 points in the second to enter the half with a 24-18 lead. Salado Lady Eagles increased their lead in the third scoring 7 points to enter the fourth leading 31-20. Salado gave up the lead in the fourth quarter being outscored 4-15 to go into overtime tied 39-39. Lexington scored 6 points in overtime to hand Salado a 39-41 loss.
Taryn Kornegay and Taylor Atwood led Salado in scoring with 10 points each.
Also scoring for Salado Lady Eagles were Jaylee Sebek, 6 points; Ashley Adams, 3 points; Meredith Ward, 3 points; Payton Drietz, 3 points; Becca Carroll, 2 points; Carmella Perez, 2 points.

Rosebud-Lott 38
Salado Lady Eagles set the tone of the game in first quarter in a 53-38 win over district opponent Rosebud-Lott on Jan. 25.
Salado Lady Eagles started the first quarter of the game scoring 19 points with holding Rosebud-Lott to a free throw for a 19-1 lead. Meredith Ward scored 8 of her 14 points in the first quarter to help Salado out to the lead. Salado matched Rosebud-Lott with 11 points to enter the half with a 30-12 lead. Salado scored 11 points in the third to increase the lead to 41-20. The Lady Eagles added 12 points in the fourth to hold the lead and win 53-38.
Ward led Salado in scoring with 14 points. Followed by Sebek and Adams, 12 points each.
Also scoring for the Lady Eagles were Kornegay, 6 points; Drietz, 4 points; Atwood, 3 points; Carroll, 2 points.
JV Girls 44

Salado JV Girls beat Lexington 44-26 Jan. 25.
Salado JV Girls led Lexington 16-8 in the first quarter. Gema Vitolaz of Salado scored 8 of her 20 points in the first quarter. Salado added 8 points in the second quarter to enter the half with a 24-16 lead. Gema Vitolaz scored 8 of Salado’s 10 third quarter points to increase Salado’s lead to 34-22 going into the fourth. Salado JV Girls closed the game out with 10 points in the fourth for a final of 44-26.
Gema Vitolaz led Salado in scoring with 20 points. Followed by Samantha Isbell, 8 points.
Also scoring for Salado JV Girls were Reina Drake, 5 points; Katie Champion, 4 points; Tabitha Mazo, 4 points; Abby Quick, 3 points.
JV Girls 44
Rosebud-Lott 6
Salado JV Girls crushed Rosebud-Lott 44-6 Jan. 25.
Salado JV Girls held Rosebud-Lott scoreless in the first quarter to take a 14-0 lead. Samantha Isbell scored 9 of Salado’s 11 second quarter points to enter the half leading 25-2. Salado JV Girls outscored Rosebud-Lott 9-0 in the third to enter the fourth with a 34-2 lead. Salado added 10 points in the fourth for 44-6 final.
Isbell led Salado in scoring with 19 points. Followed by Vitolaz, 13 points.
Also scoring for the Salado JV Girls were Drake, 6 points; Champion, 4 points; Quick, 2 points.
