Owens, Bessie M.

Funeral services for Bessie M. Owens, 91, of Belton, were held Sept. 2 at the First Baptist Church of Belton with Rev. Andy Davis officiating. Burial followed at the Moffatt Cemetery.

Owens died Aug. 30 in a Temple hospital.

She was born in Pendleton, May 28, 1915, the daughter of James L. and Mary Safley. She married Oran H. Owens March 12, 1937 in Moffatt. She worked for many years in the cafeteria at Belton’s Southwest School. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Belton, where she was a past member of the Prayer Ministry of the Church. Owens was a volunteer for the Scott & White Memorial Hospital Auxiliary for many years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Oran H. Owens, on April 29, 1970; one grandson, Wade Owens, in 1990; three brothers and six sisters.

Survivors include her three sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Susan Owens, of Granbury, Kenneth and Patty Owens, of Belton, and Don and Judy Owens, of Belton; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Building Fund at First Baptist Church Belton, 506 North Main Street, 76513.

Thompson, Jack E.

Jack E. Thompson passes away Aug. 27

Jack E. Thompson, 81, of Salado, passed away Aug. 27 at Scott & White Hospital. A memorial visitation was held Aug. 28; a private family service will be held at a later date.

He was born July 10, 1925 in Cameron, to Jasper Ervin and Mattie Bernice (Richey) Thompson. He attended Rogers High School and Texas Christian University in Fort Worth. Thompson joined the U.S. Navy and served as a medic during World War II. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Salado. He made his career in media advertising.He was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his wife, Estelle (Baggett) Thompson; daughter, Tawana Dunham; son, Jack Erice Thompson; and daughter Lee Ann Bott, as well as eight grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Scott & White Cardiology Unit in Temple.

Weaver, H.F. “Hap”

H.F. “Hap” Weaver passes

H.F. “Hap” Weaver, 88, of Salado died Thursday, Aug. 24, 2006.

H.F. Weaver was born in Teague to John Frank and Lily Brannon Weaver. He graduated from Van High School and from Texas A&M University in 1950. He retired from Mobil Oil Corp. As a regulatory engineer in 1988. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II, serving in the European Theater. He married Ginger Miers on Oct 5, 1946, in Mexia. He was a member of Temple Bible Church and Gideons International.

Survivors are his wife of Salado; two sons, Hap Weaver of Boerne and John Fred Weaver of Salado; a daughter, Yvette Ellison of Petersburg; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Memorials can be made to Temple Bible Church, Gideons International or the charity of one’s choice.

Bowmer, Jim DeWitt

Jim Bowmer passes away July 20

Jim DeWitt Bowmer, 87, of Bell County, Texas, died July 20, 2006 at his home. Graveside services was held, July 24, 2006 at the Bowmer Ranch with Rev. Bruce Burleson and Pastor Jimmy Towers officiating. Burial was in the Peaceable Kingdom Baptist Church Cemetery.
Jim DeWitt Bowmer was born May 4, 1919 in Bell County to DeWitt and Linnie Morgan Bowmer. He was a graduate of Temple High School in 1936, Temple Junior College in 1938, received his B.A. with honors from Baylor University and his LLB with honors in 1942 from Baylor Law School. Bowmer served in the U. S. Army with JAG during World War II having served in Africa, Italy, Hawaii and the Philippines.

Bowmer was Past President, State Bar of Texas, Past Chairman of Board of Directors, State Bar of Texas, Distinguished Alumnus of Baylor University and Baylor Law School, former Adjunct Professor at Baylor University Law School, recipient of honorary doctorate from the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor on May 11, 1996, and member of Board of Trustees, The Texas Supreme Court Historical Society. He wrote or co-authored articles on Criminal Law and Procedure in the Baylor Law Review and Texas Bar Journal. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Temple and Peaceable Kingdom Baptist Church.

He married Daurice Spoonts Yarbrough who died June 8, 1994. He also was preceded in death by two sisters, Ruth Burleson and Martha Bowmer and his grandson Charles Bowmer Schreiner V.

Survivors include two daughters, Bonnie Nell Neal and husband Larry, of Temple, and Mary Helen Schreiner and husband Charles IV, of Salado and Kerrville; seven grandchildren, Scott Edmund Simmonds and wife Shawn, Dan DeWitt Simmonds and wife Marla, Brian Allen Neal and wife Jamie, Tiffany Nell DeWitt Schreiner, Julie Daurice Dickson and husband Sam, Tessa Charlene Schreiner, and Tyndal Daurice Elizabeth Schreiner; seven great-grandchildren, Marli Joyce-Daurice Simmonds, Abigail Marie Simmonds, Colton Bowmer Simmonds, Jacqueline Nell Simmonds, Carlie Lorene Simmonds, Tucker Jackson Neal, and Annie Elizabeth Dickerson.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Peaceable Kingdom Retreat for Children, 19051 FM 2484, Killeen, Texas 76542. Scanio-Harper Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Milford, Thomas

Milford passes away July 3 Services for Ross

Services for Thomas Milford, 71, of Salado were held July 7 at First Baptist Church of Salado with Brian Dunks and Andy Davis officiating. Burial followed at Zion Lutheran Cemetery in Helotes, TX, with Leonard Shanklin, of Luling, officiating. Milford passed away July 3.

He was born July 6, 1934, in Eastland County, TX to Clinton Coy Mil-ford and Minnie Jo Morgan Milford. He married Patricia Hand Milford on Aug. 4, 1956. He served in the Army in 1956-58.

Milford was a basketball coach (and other sports) for 37 years in San Antonio, Luling, Irving, Belton and Moody, as well as serving as assistant to Richard Herbst for the UMHB Men’s Basketball program. He also served as a deacon and Sunday School teacher for over 40 years.

He was preceded in death by his father and by his son, Jeffrey Caly Milford, sister Jo Frances Box, and great-grand-daughter, Morgean Renea Kessler.

He is survived by his wife Patricia, of Salado; his mother, of Cleburne; two daughters, Gaye Cowell, of Belton and Stephanie Milford, of Bedford; three granddaughters, Shayne Sweeney, of College Station, Vanessa Byrd, of Belton, and Jessica Byrd, of Bedord; one grandson, Randy Kessler, of Cameron; three sisters, LaNell Adams, of Hillsboro, Sandra Adams, of Decatur, and Cathi Neal, of Decatur; and five great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Salado, 210 S.Main St., Salado, TX 76571.

Ross, Tommy Bruce

Services for Ross held July 8 in Killeen

Tommy Bruce Ross, 81, of Salado, died July 8 in a Temple hospital.

Graveside services were held July 12 at the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen with full military honors.

He was born Oct. 21, 1925, in Dallas, to Thomas and Bynah Ann Ross. He joined the Marines in 1943. He served in WWII and was discharged on Dec. 20, 1945. He worked as a bricklayer in construction for most of his life.

Ross is survived by two sisters, Bynah Stallings, of Salado, and Lucille Camp-bell, of San Antonio.

Services were directed by Dossman Funeral Home of Belton.

Clark, Patricia Ann

Patricia Ann Clark services held

Services were held June 29 for Patricia Ann Clark of Kempner at Sheppard Chapel of Memories in Copperas Cove. Interment with military honors followed in the Scattering Garden at the Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen.

Many in Salado will remember Patricia as a long time friend and volunteer at Tablerock in Salado.

Clark was a technical supervisor for Robertson Blood Bank in Fort Hood.

She died June 25 in her home. She is survived by her husband of 32 years, Charles R. (Chuck) Clark of Kempner, a daughter Michelle Hamilton of Fort Campbell, Kentucky and a son Charles Rolland Clark II of Arlington, a sister Barbara Sims of Parkersburg, West Virginia, three brothers; Harold Williamson of Tazewell, Virginia, James Williamson of Huntington, West Virginia and Allen Williamson of Beckley, West Virginia and her parents James and Frankie Williamson of Tazewell, Virginia.

In keeping with Pat’s life long support of young people, the Patricia Ann Clark Memorial Scholarship fund has been set up at the Heart O’ Texas Federal Credit Union, 905 M.L. King Jr. Drive, Copperas Cove, Texas 76522.

McColl, Mary Louise Boyer

Mary Louise McColl passes away

Mary Louise (Boyer) McColl, of Temple, passed away June 29 in a Temple nursing home.
Born on June 10, 1917 in Salina, KS to Charles Leonard Boyer and Josephine Locke, McColl was preceded in death by her husband, V.E. McColl on September 11, 1911 in Brookings, OR.

She is survived by her daughter and only child, Joan (McColl) Schrock, of Salado, her son-in-law Jack Schrock, nephew Bob Hagler and wife Ailene, of Kerrville; two grandchildren, Jody Davis, of Mesquite, and Joel Schrock, of Houston; and seven great-grandchildren. During their marriage, the McColls had also resided in Phoenix, AZ, Garland and Brookings, OR.

She has been a resident of Garden Estates in Temple for the past five years, but suffered a series of strokes in April, 2006 which eventually led to her death.

Final arrangements are incomplete at this time, but in lieu of flowers, friends are asked to make a donation to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

Falkner, James “Jim” C.

Funeral services held for James ‘Jim’ Falkner

Funeral services for James “Jim” C. Falkner, 88, of Salado, were held July 1 at the First Baptist Church in Salado, with Rev. Randy Carder officiating. Burial followed at the Oakwood Cemetery in Waco.

Falkner died June 29 at a Temple hospital.

He was born in Waco to Mordis and Jessie Falkner. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving with the K-9 Corps during WWII. He was a dog show judge for many years, judging at shows in the United States, Canada and Mexico. Falkner lived in Dallas before retiring to Salado 20 years ago. He was a member of the Salado Village Artists and the Salado Lions Club. He was also a member of the First Baptist Church of Salado.

He is survived by his wife, Frances Falkner, of Salado. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of Salado, 210 S. Main St., Salado, TX 76571.

Reed, Gladyne McLean

Burial for Reed held June 23 in Salado Cemetery

Gladyne McLean Reed passed away June 15 in Palo Alto, CA, and was buried in Salado Cemetery June 23.

She was descended from five generations of Central Texas pioneers. Her parents were Dallas Duncan McLean and Gladys Robertson. She was born on July 25, 1915, near Joe Lee on the Duncan Calhoun McLean farm. She married Robert Dawson Eis, and they had one child, a daughter. Later, she married James Cornelius Reed and lived for many years in California.

She is survived by two brothers, Dr. Malcolm Dallas McLean, of Georgetown, and Dr. Sterling Robertson McLean, of Palo Alto, CA; and a daughter, Roberta Eis Ling, of Palo Alto, CA.
