Jack Leslie Whitis of Salado, Texas, passed away peacefully at home on May 26th, leaving behind a legacy of dedication, service, and strength.

He was born on December 5, 1941, in Belton, Texas, to Marjorie and Jesse Whitis, who instilled in him a commitment to education and family.
A lifelong advocate for learning, Jack pursued his education with passion. He worked in his early years at a local grocery store and as a campus boy for University of Mary-Hardin Baylor. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Baylor University and a master’s degree from Abilene Christian University—foundations that supported a long and impactful career in education. Jack served in education for over 35 years, ranging from roles as math teacher, driver’s ed teacher, principal and superintendent, believing deeply in the power of education to change lives. He also served as a middle school coach and was an avid supporter of the athletic departments at all of the schools where he served. His impact continues to be felt in the lives of the students he taught, the educators he mentored, and the communities he helped shape, including Salado, Trent, Oglesby, and Rogers, Texas.
Jack found immense joy in fishing and golfing, but especially in being a grandfather. He cared deeply for Bristol, Raleygh, and Braxton with unwavering love, always eager to support them wholeheartedly and share stories and laughter. His pride in them was evident to everyone who knew him.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the doctors, nurses, and staff at Baylor Scott & White Hospital, BSW Hospice, and Tender Mercies for their compassionate care & support during his healthcare journey.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Marjorie and Jesse Whitis; his sister, Nelda Shipp and brother-in-law Lynn Shipp; and sisters-in-law Jean Whitis and Grace Whitis.
He is survived by his loving family: Katy, Susan, and Beth; sons-in-law Chad and Glenn; brothers and sister-in-law Howard, Bob, Dillard, and Karolyn; and his cherished grandchildren, Bristol, Raleygh, and Braxton. He also leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, grand-nephews, and cherished friends in Salado Oaks.
A private memorial will be held by the family. A come-and-go Celebration of Life will be held at Oscar Store on Saturday, June 7th, from 1 p.m. through 3 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Jack’s memory may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or to the Jesse and Marjorie Whitis Endowed Scholarship at UMHB.
