Services for Lieutenant Colonel (Ret) Richard Grimes Castle will be  10 a.m. Jan. 23 at Texas State Cemetery, Austin, with full Military Honors.

LTC Castle died on December 1, 2022, at his residence in Salado.  

Lt. Col. Richard Castle

He was born in Rochester, New York to Alfred and Adele Castle on December 21, 1946.  The family relocated to Dayton, Ohio and he graduated from Oakwood High School in 1964 and Ohio University in 1968 with a BBA in Business.

He attended US Army Basic Training, followed by Officer Candidate School at Ft. Benning, GA commissioned as Second Lieutenant in the Infantry. He was assigned to Ft. Ord California, serving in the 2nd Advanced Infantry Training Brigade as a training officer. In 1971 he was deployed to Bien Hoa, Vietnam serving with MACV. Following his tour in Vietnam he was assigned to Ft. Hood promoted to the rank of Captain.  Subsequent tours to Ft. Lewis for Company Command, Chattanooga with Recruiting Command, Hawaii, promoted to Major, serving as a Battalion XO for the 1st Battalion, 21st Infantry, followed by attendance at the Command and General Staff College in Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas. He returned to Ft. Hood with a career branch change to Quartermaster.  While assigned to the 13th Corps Support Command (COSCOM) he married Major Borah Van Dormolen and moved to Germany, as Lieutenant Colonel serving in the Transcom Headquarters in Frankfurt.  He final assignment was Ft. Hood.

His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (1OLC), Army Commendation Medal (30LC), Army Achievement Medal (1OLC) Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal (1BSS), Vietnam Service Medal (3BSS), Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbons w/ numeral2, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Service Medal, Expert Infantryman Badge, and Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry w/ Palm.

LTC Castle was preceded in death by his wife, parents, and brother, Edward Castle.  He is survived by his brother, Charles Castle of Ohio.

Services are in the care of Broecker Funeral Home of Salado.
