Beginning Aug. 1 at the Salado Museum, Salado Village Voice will present “Cartooning Texas: One Hundred Years of Cartoon Art in the Lone Star State,” an exhibition developed by Maury Forman and Robert A. Calvert for the Center for Texas Studies at the University of North Texas with support from Humanities Texas, the state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities.

The annual Salado Fireworks show on Salado Creek on July 6 with the show beginning at full dark about 9 p.m. at Sherrill Park in Mill Creek.
There will be a day full of activities, including food and drinks for purchase, kids’ games and booths. There will also be a men’s golf tournament during the day.

Services held Dec. 5 for Joyce Edwina Smith
Services for Joyce Edwina Smith, of Temple, were Dec. 5, 2004 at Harper-Talasek Funeral Home in Temple with Rev. Joe Bentley officiating. The body was cremated. She died Dec. 3, 2004 at Wellington Living Center in Temple.
Joyce Edwina Smith was born in Agua Dulce, Texas to John William Smith and Nell Jones Smith Brandhorst. She graduated from the Incarnate Word Academy in Corpus Christi at age 17. She operated a very successful telephone answering service in Alice, Texas during the 1950s.
She moved to Waco, where she worked as a bookkeeper for Texas State Technical Institute, now TSTC. After retirement, she moved to Temple and was a professional, specialized seamstress.
Smith was preceded in death by her mother Nell Jones Smith Brandhorst in 2001, her husband Jacob Ronald Smith in 1970 and her grandson Jason Randall Smith in 1997.
Survivors are three sons, J.R. Smith, of Kingsville, Texas; John Wm. (Bill) Smith, of Salado, and Fredrick A. Smith, of Temple. She is survived by 10 grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

Turner, Eddie Daniel
Eddie Daniel Turner passes away Jan. 28
Eddie Daniel Turner, 91 years old of Pasadena and formerly of Salado, passed away on January 28, 2006.
He was born October 29, 1914 to Lee Ander and Radie Pauline Blackwell Turner in Coryell County, Eliga, Texas.
Eddie was the youngest of seven children. He attended Killeen High School and was a member of the Church of Christ since childhood.
Turner moved to Houston in the early 1940’s and started to work driving a bus for the Houston Transit Company. In 1943, he went to work for Sinclair Refining Company where he worked for 30 years before retiring. Following his dream to return to the central Texas area after retirement, he and his wife moved to Salado. They lived there until 2001, when they moved back to Pasadena to be near their children.
He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Hope Edwards Turner, who he married June 26, 1937. Also, his daughters Lanora Turner, of Pasadena; Sarah Lee, of Austin and formerly of Salado; son Sidney D. Turner and wife Marjorie Dell Turner of Pasadena, 16 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
He was preceded in death by a son, Garland Eddie Turner, his parents, and siblings.
The family requests donations be made to the Eddie Daniel Turner Grandchildren Scholarship.
Daniel, James “Chief”
James ‘Chief’ Daniel services held
Services for James “Chief” Daniel were held at Dossman Funeral Home May 26 with the Rev. Joe Bentley officiating. Burial followed at the Salado Cemetery. Daniel died in Salado on May 24.
He was born September 25, 1935 in Milford, Texas to Clarence David and Ollie Edith (Moore) Daniel. He grew up in Itasca and was a graduate of Itasca High School. He attended East Texas State University, where he received his Master of Education degree in 1960.
He married Phyllis Kerr on January 29, 1964 in Marlin, Texas. He taught school in Turnersville, Moody, Orangefield and Salado, retiring in 1991 after 31 years as a Vocational Ag teacher.
Daniel was active with the Bell County Youth Fair, serving two years on the board of directors and one year as its president. He was an active member of the Salado Youth Fair Booster Club for 15 years.
A renowned hog breeder, he was instrumental in getting the Swine Type Conference brought to Bell County several years ago. The genetics of his swine program are the foundation of many of the local breeders today.He was honored this February by having his name added to the Plaza of Honor at the Bell County Expo Center.
Daniel is survived by his wife Phyllis, of Salado; three sons, Clarence Daniel of Austin, Marrion Daniel and his wife Laura of Salado, Clayton Daniel and his wife Monica of Youngsport; a brother, William Daniel of Hillsboro; and seven sisters: Mildred Watson of Iowa Park, Jessie Dial of Lone Oak, Vera Mae Woodley of Alvarado, Sylvia Wallace of Cleburne, Inez Kerby of Cleburne, Edith Minor of Burleson and Patricia McClendon of Midlothian. He is also survived by two grandchildren, Jessica and David, and a host of friends and swine producer buddies.
Pallbearers were Randy Britt, Peanut Campbell, Don Engleking, Bill Owen, C.A. Smith, Jason Medlin, Don Kennedy and John Brown. Honorary pallbearers were the Heart of Texas Feed Store Gentlemen, Jack Allen, Joe Bozon, Arthur Wade Capps, R.L. Copeland, Ben Dunnahoo, Dana Eddlemen, Jack Oliver, Wimpy Ragsdale, Paul Sandford, C.A. Smith, Kevin Spurlock, Don Thweatt and Bobby Ward.

Odessa Marie Smith Dunnahoo passes away April 28
Odessa Marie Smith Dunnahoo, 72, born Oct. 24, 1934, passed away April 28, 2007.
Marie Smith Dunnahoo is survived by her children Rick and Missy Dunna-hoo, Robert and Carrice Dunnahoo, Dee Ann and Tim Driver, Matt and Melinda Dunnahoo, Anndra Mulholland, 16 grandchildren, two great grandchildren, two sisters and two brothers. She was preceded in death by her parents, Luther Edger Smith and Essie Olene Benton Smith, her husband of 48 years, Robert Dunnahoo Sr. and by her grandson Jared Dunnahoo.
Services were held May 1 at the Salado Church of Christ. A short grave-side service will follow at the Bell Plains Cemetery.
Arrangements were in the care of Harper-Talasek in Temple.

WACO – The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) will temporarily close the southbound lane of FM 2268, through the current construction project area in Salado, Tuesday, May 14, weather permitting. The temporary closure will take place, between the hours of 7p.m. Tuesday May 14 and 5 a.m. Wednesday, May 15 and allow concrete traffic barriers to be set for safety and traffic control, part of the FM 2268/Main Street@Campbell Branch bridge replacement in downtown Salado.
