New coach Tara Hatfield’s Lady Eagles volleyball team have started out with a 2-4 record, with its losses coming at the hands of 3A and 5A schools. The Lady Eagles beat Jarrell and Florence, 2A foes in the Gatesville Tournament, where Salado went 2-1 in three rounds, losing to Round Rock Christian in the first round.

After fighting Round Rock Christian to a tough 23-25 first set, Salado lost the second set 13-25 in the first round of the Gatesville volleyball tournament Aug. 22.
Senior Shyenne Hicks attacked the net 7 times for 5 kills to lead the offensive attack. Sophomore Meagan Hill had 3 kills on as many attacks. Shian Pruitt also had a kill for Salado.
Hill led the girls with 3 service points, followed by Hicks, 2 service points and Kayli Beck and Mallory Schattle, 1 service point each. Beck’s point came off of an ace.
Hill also had the only block in the match for Salado.
Meanwhile, Hicks had 7 assists in the match.

Salado earned its first win of the year when the Lady Eagles faced the only 2A opponent so far this season, winning in three sets, 20-25, 25-19 and 25-20.
The girls bounced back from the first set loss of 20-25 for the wins in the second round of the Gatesville tournament, facing Belton in the third round.

Salado Lady Eagles fought the 5A Belton Lady Tigers through a three-set loss in the Gatesville tournament Aug. 23, losing 18-25, 19-25 and 20-25.
Hicks led the attack at the net with seven kills on 10 attempts. Cheyenne Vaca followed with five kills on seven attempts. Wright had a perfect five kills on five attempts. Schattle also had a kill at the net.
The girls served three aces in the match, delivered by Valeriano, Schattle and Wright.
Hill had the lone blocked shot in the match for Salado and had 18 assists in the three sets.

Florence 16 25 10
Salado won its second game of the Gatesville tourney Aug. 24, beating district foe Florence Lady Buffs in three sets, 25-16, 22-25, 25-10.
Atwood led the Lady Eagles offensive attackwith 11 kills on 14 attacks at the net. Hicks followed with 9 kills on 12 attacks. Schattle had 5 kills, followed by Vaca, 3 kills, and Victoria Moseley, 2 kills.
Vaca had 7 aces on 17 service attempts. Tori Laughland followed with 6 aces on 18 serves. Moseley, Hill, and Schattle all had an ace in the match.
Vaca and Laughland led Salado with 14 service points each. Also earning service points were Hill, 7, Schattle and Moseley, 4 each, Atwood, 2 points, and Valerianao and Hicks, 1 each.
Atwood blocked 4 shots and Schattle blocked 1 shot on defense.
Hill had 29 assists in the match.

Salado struggled through a three-set loss to the 5A Ellison Lady Eagles Aug. 20 in their first home match. After Ellison won 25-13 and 25-14, Salado forced a close third set, losing 26-24.
Hicks attacked the net eight times and had five kills to lead Salado. Wright had three kills on three attacks while Sebek had three kills on four attacks. Schattle had two kills on two attacks and Pruitt had a kill on four attacks.
Sebek and Hicks each had seven service points. Meanwhile, Sebek had an ace at the service line. Hill also had an ace and three points. Others serving for points were Beck, 3, Schattle, 2, and Wright, 1.
Hill led the defense with four blocks while Taylor Valeriano had one block.
Hill had 14 assists.

The 5A Ellison Lady Eagles swept Salado in the opening match of the season at home. But Hatfield’s Salado girls closed the gap to make Ellison fight for a 24-26 third set win on Aug. 16.
Hill led the girls at the net offensively with six kills on 10 attempts. Sebek had three kills on four attempts and Sydney Wright was perfect with three kills on three attempts. Valeriano and Pruitt also notched kills in the game.
At the service line, Sebek and Hill both had aces. Sebek had 12 service attempts, with a serving percentage of 83.3, while Hill had eight attempts with a serving percentage of 87.5.
Hill led the team with 12 assists in the match.
Defensively, Hill blocked four shots while Valeriano blocked one.
Salado will compete in the Waco Robinson tournament Aug. 29 and 31. Game times are to be determined later.
