Candidates for a two-year term as Mayor of the Village of Salado are Hans Fields and write-in candidate Skip Blancett.
Hans Fields
Hans Fields is candidate for Mayor of Salado.
He is married to Judy Gatlin Fields and the couple have three children and five grandchilren.
The Fields came to Salado eight years ago, when he retired from Chevron Oil Company/Chevron Phillips Chemical Company.
After graduating from Middletown High School in Indiana, he attended Texas Westeron College of the University of Texas (now known as University of Texas at El Paso) on a full basketball scholarship. He was certified in all levels of education. He earned a Master’s degree from Middle Tennesse State University in Murfreesboro, Tennessee in Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics. He had also gone through O-level chemistry tuition in Singapore. The curriculum there include environmental conservation.
Hans had two careers. The first was as a teacher. He taught chemistry and biology and was the department chairman at Ysleta High School. He taught pre-med biology at El Paso Community College. He also coached basketball, football, track and golf at Ysleta School High School, where he worked for 18 years.
He was Senior Safety Engineer for 28 years for Chevron Oil Company/Chevron Phillips Chemical Company with assignments in El Paso, Beaumont, Saudi Arabia and Qatar. He was the emergency response team lead officer, security officer at the El Pas Refinery and the oil refinery fire and HAZMAT trainer for Reno Nevada operation. He was also a liaison to OSHA.
He is a member of the following organizations in Salado: Member of Charter Class Leadership Salado, Lions Club Past VP, Historical Society (Board of Directors: Past President, VP); Mill Creek Community Assn. President; Salado Volunteers (providing free lawn services for citizens and village)Salado Ambassadors; past president Community Emergency Response Team; Past member Salado Chamber of Commerce; Salado Methodist Church.
He served as Village Alderman for four years with primary duties including the wastewater/sewer plants, researching issues, seeking advice and opinions from constituents, and, he says, “voting their voice.”
Skip Blancett
Skip Blancett has been married to Gayle for 48 years. They have three adult children: Tim Blancett, the general sales manager of BMW in Raleigh North Carolina, Brad Blancett, manager of IBM in Raleigh, North Carolina and Hollye Blancett, an artist and author in Salado. They also have seven grandchildren: Emma, Abbey, Ryan, Trevor, Grace, Alex and Casey.
Blancett holds a Bachelor’s degree in History and English Literature from Howard Payne Universityin Brownwood. He holds a Master’s degree in Theology from Southern Methodist University. He holds a second Master’s degree in International Relations from St. Mary’s University in San Antonio. He was awarded a Doctorate from Southern Methodist University.
He is currently the Chief of Counseling and Chief of Programs, ESD at Fort Hood, where is a GS-13 with 42 employees in his charge.
He is a retired Navy Captain, after ww years in the service.
Blancett is a retired United Methodist Ministed with 51 years of service to churches.
The Blancetts came to Salado more than 17 years ago when Skip was called to take over the Salado United Methodist Church.
He lists stained glass and acrylic painting as his hobbies.
He was elected Mayor of Salado in 2014.
