Ag Commish asks Gov. to open tasting rooms

COMMISSIONER MILLER EXPANDS REOPEN REQUEST TO GOVERNOR ABBOTT TO INCLUDE DISTILLERY, BREWPUB TASTING ROOMS

Says governor should not destroy livelihoods while attempting to save lives

(AUSTIN)  Today, Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller expanded his request to Governor Abbott to reopen winery tasting rooms to include similar direct-to-consumer facilities for Texas distilleries and breweries.  In a letter dated today, Miller asked Abbott to amend his June 26 Executive Order to remove Texas distillery tasting rooms, brewery and brewpub taprooms and beer gardens from the definition of bars and allow them to reopen immediately under the same health, safety and social distancing rules as Texas restaurants.

Reopening: Where to eat, drink, stay in Salado

Governor Greg Abbott has lifted the ban on restaurants to allow dining in, but there are restrictions to include a maximum capacity of 25% seating and other social distancing and hygiene measures. Not all restaurants are reopening for dining. Alexander’s Craft Cocktails and Kitchen, 602 Center Circle; 254-947-5554. Tuesday-Saturday, 5-9 p.m. Limited indoor seating, expanded outdoor seating with a limited menu offering, full bar, specials, etc. Dine-in, take out and delivery options from the a la carte menu. Mother’s Day packages are available for take-home. Open for Mother’s Day on May 10 with two seatings available at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. by reservations.

Village will likely re-address election decision

Action to move election will have to be taken by Board of Aldermen.

In light of an advisory email from the Elections Division of the Texas Secretary of State, Salado aldermen will likely revisit their split-decision vote on March 23 to continue to hold the Village general election on May 2. While the Village has not formally posted anything about a meeting to move the election date, aldermen were informed via text from the Village Administrator at 1:23 p.m. March 25 that an Emergency Meeting of the Board of Aldermen will be held at 9 a.m. March 26 “to consider moving May election to Nov, in light of correspondence from the Secretary of State.”

Despite the Village voting on March 23 to keep the May 2 election date, Mayor Skip Blancett took to social media March 24 to tell voters “an order has been given for 3 November.”

Village election will stay in May but school moves to November

Two hours after County Judge David Blackburn issued a “stay at home” directive, Village of Salado aldermen voted to defeat a motion by alderman Frank Coachman to move the Village election from May 2 to November 3. The motion received a second from John Cole following a brief discussion of the ramifications of moving the election from the May uniform election date to the November uniform election date. Across town, Salado ISD Trustees voted unanimously to move the election to November 3.

Bell County issues Stay Home, Stay Safe directive

Bell County Judge David Blackburn issued a “stay-at-home” directive during a 4 p.m. News conference, the third from Bell County, which will go into effective at midnight tonight (March 23, 2020). The directive requires all Bell County residents should “stay home and stay safe.”

At the time Judge Blackburn issued the directive, the Bell County Health Department listed 16 confirmed cases of novel coronavirus in the County.
