DALLAS – A new report shows that one-quarter of Texas’ seven million children live in poverty, and that doesn’t bode well for either their future, or the future of the state. The annual State of Texas Children 2016 report, released by the Center for Public Policy Priorities, evaluates the health, education and financial security of kids in the Lone Star State.

AUSTIN, Texas – The Texas Legislature has thus far refused to expand its Medicaid program under the Affordable Care Act, but the state still receives billions of health-care dollars from the federal government. Federal officials just extended the state’s Section 11-15 waiver, which reimburses hospitals for uncompensated care – but money from that program will disappear soon unless the state replaces it with Medicaid.

Early bird GeekFest tickets on sale now
Advance tickets for GeekFest 2016 are now available. GeekFest – a celebration of all things geek – gaming programs and tournaments, anime, costume contests, science fiction, technology and fantasy – will be held August 12-14 on the campus of Central Texas College (CTC) in the Mayborn Science Theater and Anderson Campus Center. Early bird passes are on sale now through June 30. A limited number of VIP passes are available for $40 (save $10) and a three-day pass is $15 (save $5). Tickets are available online at www.starsatnight.org/geekfest. Proceeds benefit the CTC Foundation scholarship program.
Thomas Arnold Elementary School second graders got a personal tour of the Salado Sculpture Garden on May 13 by board members of Public Arts League of Salado (PALS) and Keep Salado Beautiful (KSB), where they got to get their hands on the art on display at the garden just off of Salado Plaza Dr.

Thomas Arnold Elementary Principal Lisa Nix accepts a donation of $186 from second grader Sydney Klechka. Klechka earned money by selling artwork she created in order to help students who may not have school supplies to start the year in 2016-2017.
Salado Volunteer Fire Department has received its new rescue unit. The $195,000 truck was delivered last week, but is not yet ready for service. It will replace the 1995 International that was lost to fire March 30.
From Sirena to Salado Legends to the Sculpture Garden to artists working in many media, Salado has been a home to the arts and to artists.

The Board of Directors of the Central Texas Area Museum in Salado (www.saladoscottishfestival.com) has named Coleman Hampton as Interim Curator for the historic museum. Hampton is a graduate of the Baylor University Department of Museum Studies in Waco.
