services set for Jim Graham

Funeral services for Jim Bruce Graham, age 54, of Canadian, Texas, will be 10:30 a.m. June 20 at the W.S. and E.S. Jones Community Pavilion with Dean English, minister of the Canadian Church of Christ, officiating. Burial will follow at the Edith Ford Memorial Cemetery.

Graham was killed in the line of duty June 17 while serving court papers. He was a Deputy for Hemphill County, a posi­tion he served in since 1987.

Graham was born May 8, 1947 at Higgins, Texas. He graduated from Cana­dian High School in 1965 and attended West Texas State College. He served in the US Army and was a graduate of the Amarillo College Law Enforcement Academy.

He married Lynda Lou Hill on July 17, 1973 at Arnett, Oklahoma.

He formerly served on the Hemphill County Vol­unteer Fire Department and was currently serving as the Fire Marshall for the City of Canadian and Hemphill County.

He was a bit and spur maker and a life member of the Bit and Spur Association.

He is survived by his wife Lynda Graham, of Canadian and formerly of Salado, a daughter Sherry Graham, of Canyon, a sister Jerry Ann Dickinson, of Canadian and a nephew, David Dickinson of Amarillo.

Graham was the son-in-law of Louis and Fannie Hill of Salado.

Patterson passes away at age 75

Services were held for Jim Williams Patterson, age 75, May 25 at the First Baptist Church of Salado with ministers Brian Dunks and B.O. Baker officiating. Burial followed in the Salado Cemetery.

Patterson died on May 22.

He was born on March 12, 1926, m Blooming Grove, Texas to August and Sudie Holditch Patterson. After graduating from Blooming Grove High School in 1943, he served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He married Wynell Gillen on August 4, 1950.

A petroleum Landman for over 40 years, he was employed by Lone Star Producing Company (later Enserch Exploration) for 26 years. With that company, he worked and lived in Mississippi, Okla­homa, San Antonio and Dallas. After retiring from Enserch, he joined Lyco Energy Corporation and then Five States Energy Company m Dallas. Moving to Salado m 1991, he continued to serve the 011 industry as an Indepen­dent Petroleum Landman.

He attended Oklahoma City University and received a Bachelor of Laws from Jackson School of Law in 1964 and an Alumnus By Choice from Baylor University in 1992. A past President of the Dallas Association of Petroleum Landmen and a past officer of the Ameri­can Association of Proffes­sional Landmen, he was one of the first individuals. designated as a Certified Professional Landman in 1980. He was a frequent lecturer for oil and gas courses at Southern Meth­odist University, the Uni­versity of Texas at Dallas and Dallas Community College. For the South­western Legal Foundation, he chaired the 1996 Oil and Gas Institute for Petroleum landmen. For several years, he served as a Trustee of Dallas Bap­tist University.

He was past President of Salado Lions Club longtime member of the Masonic Lodge, leader in the Salado Chamber of Commerce, Board Member of the Salado Civic Center Foundation and a past President of Mill Creek Community Association. He and Wynell were recognized as Alumni of the Year in 1996 by the Central Texas Chapter of The Baylor Alumni Association.

A deacon and devoted servant of the Lord, a former member of Royal Haven Baptist Church in Dallas, he was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Salado. In the congregationn, he was known as a faithful and gentle servant. For the last several years, he served the church as Chairman of the Strategic Building Committee for its recently completed Worship Center. Last month, he was named 2001 Senior servant of the Year by the Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Don. Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Wynell Gilen Patterson; son and daughter-in-law, Randy and Phyllis Patterson of San Antonio; son and daughter-in-law, Ken and Cristol Patterson of Fair Oaks Ranch; son and daughter-in-law, Kevin and Shannon Patterson of Dallas; daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Greg Stapp of Dallas; grandchildren, Paul and Angela Patterson; Clint and Sam Patterson; McKenzie and Mason Stapp; brother and sister-in-law, G.W. and Earldean Patterson of Blooming Grove; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Salado.

Williams dies in Belton Nursing Home

Funeral services for Dee Laura WIlliams, age 77, of Salado were held May 23 at the Dossman Funeral Home of Belton with Rev. Billy Johnson and Rev. Brian Dunks officiating. Burial followed at the Salado Cemetery.

Mrs. Williams died May 21 in a Belton nurs­ing home.

Dee was born Septem­ber 4, 1923 in Madagorda, Texas to Charles Pelton and Lois G. (Dunbar) Eidelbach. She married Truett Williams on August 25, 1946 in Madagorda.

Survivors include her husband, Truett Williams of Salado; one daughter, Trudee Gordon of Austin; one brother Charles Paul Eidelbach of Texas City, and two grandchildren, Gregory Williams Gordon and Garhett Matson Gordon.

Ragas passes away at age 79

Services for Thelma Morris Ragas, age 79, of Belton were held April 23 at Heartfield Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Skip Blancett officiating. Burial followed at Rest­haven Cemetery south of Belton.

Thelma Ragas died April 20 at her home. She was born Oct. 19, 1921 in Doylestown, Pennsylvania to Robert Lee and Helen Shaffer Cowen Sr. She married John Travis Morris on Nov. 2, 1938. He preceded her in death in Dec. 1972. Ragas worked for Griggs Equipment from 1971-1985. She also worked for Butch’s Res­taurant for 4 years. She then married Leon Ragas in 1988. He also preceded her in death in 1993. She was preceded in death by one son Doyle Morris on April 16, 1987 and one daughter Dena White on September 28, 2000.

Survivors include 8 sons, Travis Lee Morris of Duncan, OK; Victor Her­bert Morris of Moffat, TX; Wilburn Foster Morris of Belton,TX; John Martin Morris of Anacortes, WA; Jerry Glen Morris of Salado, TX; Walter Aurby Morris of Belton, TX; Teddy Don Morris of Salado, TX; Dave Edward Morris of Belton, TX; three daughters Linda Joyce Vanwinkle of Belton, TX; Beverly Ann Duke of Nolanville, TX; Odessa Faye Sherwood of Belton, TX; three brothers Bailey Pate Cowen of Denver, CO; Joe Milton Cowen of Burton, TX; J.I. Cowen of Moody, TX; two sisters Doris Nell Cox and Carolyn Sue Cox both of Belton, TX. She is also survived by 33 grandchil­dren and 25 great-grandchildren.

Pollard passes away April 4 in nursing home

L.E. (Ed) Pollard, Jr., age 80, of Salado died Wednesday, April 4, 200 I at a Harker Heights nursing home. Graveside ser­vices were held April 10 at Oakwood Cemetery m Waco, with Rev. Doug Tucker officiating.

Arrangements were made by Wilkirson-Hatch­ Bailey of Waco.

Mr. Pollard was born November 2, 1920 in Ogle by, Texas. He served in the Army Air Corps from 1941-1945 and was a B25 pilot. He attended the University of Toledo, Toledo, Ohio and Baylor Uni­versity, Waco, Texas. He graduated from Baylor Uni­versity with a BBA in 1949. Employed by West­inghouse Electric Corpora­tion from 1953 until his retirement in 1987. At that time he was Regional Sales Manager for the Archi­tectural Systems Division of Westinghouse. He was resident of Dallas from 1957 until 1993 before moving to Salado, Texas for retirement.

He enjoyed playing golf at Mill Creek Country Club until his health declined. He was a member of Salado Masonic Lodge No. 296 and Salado Lions Club.

He is survived by: his wife of 54 years, Myrnell Lewis Pollard, son, Michael Edward Pollard of Dallas, laughter, Vicki Lee Rianes and husband, Tim of Temple, grandchildren, Justin Cole and Jamie Cole, sister, Margaret Pollard McMullen of McGregor, and many nieces and nephews.

Doris Charlene Brown passes away at age 63

Doris Charlene Brown, 63, of Salado, died at her residence April 8, 2001.

Services were held April 10 at the Heartfield Funeral Home in Belton with Rev. Brent Eaton officiating. Burial followed in the Salado Cemetery.

Mrs. Brown was born on April 9. 1937 in Forth Worth to Haldon Charles and Dorothy Alice Bohen Henson. She married James M. Brown on January 21, 1960 in Oklahoma. She and her husband founded the James M. Brown Auto Insurance Company, where she served as Vice President. She also served on the Board of Directors of the Mill Creek Country Club in Salado. She was a member of the order of The Easter Star.

Survivors include her husband, Jame M. Brown of Salado; one son, Hal Brown of Arlington; one daughter, Brenda Stewart of Salado; two brothers, Wil­liam Henson of Gilmer and Ronald Henson of Katy.

Townsend passes away at age 93

Funeral services for Thelma Townsend, age 93 of Salado were held April 2 at the First Baptist Church in Salado with the Rev. Billy Johnson and Rev. Brian Dunks officiating. Burial followed at the Salado Cemetery.

Townsend died March 30, at a Bartlett nursing home.

Townsend was born October 25. 1907 in Bell County to Walter and Annie (Izard) Holt. She married William Leslie Townsend December 23, 1926. Townsend was a member of the First Baptist Church in Salado where she taught Sunday school for many years. She was preceded in death by her husband and a daughter, Joleen Townsend.

Survivors include two sons. Weldon Townsend and wife Shirley of Round Rock and Bruce Townsend and wife Ellen of Pensac­ola, Florida; one daughter, Virginia Guess and husband James of Salado; one brother, Walter “Pete” Holt of Rockport; two sisters, Wilma Saage and Dorothy Lorenz both of Bartlett; 6 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

In Lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Building Fund at the First Baptist Church in Salado.

Salado lost a true friend on March 22 in Charles Edward Smith

Services celebrating the life of Charles. Edward Smith of Salado were held March 26, 200 I at Heart­field’s Funeral Home in Belton, Texas with the Rev­erend Skip Blancett offici­ating.

Mr. Smith died March 22, 2001 at Brooke Anny Medical Center in San Antonio.

Charles Smith was born in Poplar Bluff, Missouri to Charles Judson Smith and Myrta Dyer Smith, on March 20, 1919. He lived and attended school in Urich, MO. During high school he worked at his father’s rice farm. After graduating, he served in the CCC before joining the army.
While in the army, Smith earned several awards including two Bronze Medals for bravery. He was also a Golden Glove Boxing Champion. During WWII, Smith served in Europe in the CID, CIC and the military police. He was a member of the 35th Infan­try Divi ion. After leaving active duty, he served as an advisor to the National Guard Unit in Kansas City, Missouri attaining the rank of Warrant Officer. He later worked as a chef in numer­ous restaurants In Califor­nia, Texas and Missouri, including Harry Statkers on the Plaza, and Top of the Tower in Kan as City, Mo.
He managed Bartlett Dairy Queen and later worked at the Salado Dairy Queen.

Smith was preceded in death by his wife, Joan Claire Smith, sister Myrta Marie Hill, and son Alan Christopher Smith. Survi­vors are sons: Charles Grant Smith of San Diego, CA, Thomas Edward Smith of Phoenix, AZ, and Jona­thon Allan Smith, daugh­ter Theresa Elaine Smith of Camp Yede AZ, step­daughter Zusie Weber of Phoenix, AZ , sisters Kath­erine Louise Melchiorre and Marjorie Sterling Men­denhall of Rohnert Park, CA, sister Alice Elizabeth Smith of Kansas City, MO, brothers Ronald J. Smith and “Coach” U.G. Smith of Salado, special friend Lil­lian Haverland of Kansas City, MO and three grand­children.

Charles E. Smith
March 20, 1919 – March 22, 2001

Charles E. Smith lost his courageous fight against burns at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio on Thursday. “Uncle Charles· as he was known, celebrated his 82nd birthday on the first day of Spring, March 20 in San Antonio. Te Brooke Army Medical Center’s staff daily amazement at Charles’s indeflatable attitude and stamina caused six of his attending army doctors to arrange and sing to him their own rendition of “Happy Birthday” on the ICU ward.

Mr. Smith left this life as he lived it, with dignity, courage and compassion for others. Anyone who has visited the Dairy Queen, a volleyball game, basketball game or fund­raiser knows Charles. He most often accompanied his brother, Coach Smith since eye disease took his eyesight over a year ago. This small inconvenience did not stop Charles from the things that brought him joy … working, trav­eling and supporting the community. It was at work at the Salado Dairy Queen that he was injured. Always the consummate gentleman, Charles insisted on assisting the employees. Due to the fast action of the two Dairy Queen ladies, Salado Volunteer Fireman were able to medi-vac him to Scott & White and on to Brooke Army Medical Center.

During his valiant fight, Charles’ chief concern was for those around him. Salado has truly lost a loyal friend

Nathan Morris Wetzel dies March 3

Nathan Morris Wetzel, age 74 of Liberty Hill died March 3, 2001 in George­town. He was born May 22, 1926 near Winnsboro, Texas. He married Margot Moore August 14, 1948 in Gid­dings, TX.

Nathan is survived by his wife Margot of Liberty Hill; his daughter Natha Jean Grigsby and husband Joe of Salado; daughter Ruth Michele Wetzel of Liberty Hill; two grand­sons Nathan Aaron Grigsby and Barton Lee Grigsby, of Salado; three sisters, Vonceil Quattlebaum, of Winnsboro; Maxine Gam­mill, of Sulphur Springs; and Dianne Sansom, of Paris, Texas.

Nathan was preceded in death by his father, Wesley Wetzel; stepfather, Burley Harris; mother, Charlene Harris, daughter, Margot Lynne Rebovich, and grandson, Joe Nathan Rebovich.
Nathan graduated from Sam Houston State Teach­er’s College and continued his education at University of Texas, Texas A&M Uni­versity, and University of Mary Hardin-Baylor. He taught agriculture in the Lovelady, Liberty Hill and Georgetown public schools. He served on the school board two terms, President of the P. T. A., President of the first Liberty Hill Water Supply Corporation Board.

Services were March 6, at the Gabriels Funeral Chapel m Georgetown with burial in Liberty Hill Cem­etery.

Patterson passes away March 6

Services for Edna Patterson, age 93, of Salado were held March 8 in the Eubank Chapel-Canton with Reverence Paul Taylor officiating. Burial followed in the Have of Memories Memorial park in Canton, TX.

Edna Patterson died March 6, 2001 in Temple.

She was born October 4, I 907 to Mark and Della Green Self.

Edna attended First Baptist Church in Salado. he grew up in Mesquite and married Opal Gid Patter­son. They moved several times in Texas due to his job. Eventually, they set­tled in Riley for 30 years. In 1985, they moved to Salado. Opal preceded her in death in 1986. She lived in a rest home for the past nine years. She loved gar­dening and flowers. She also enjoyed dressing dolls and selling them.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law: Helen and Dean Clemons of Salado; daughter Joy Della Conner of Baytown; sister Pearl Crane of Pla­inview; and three grand children, three great-grand­children and one great­great-grandchild.
