Satterwhite passes away at home

Martin W. Satterwhite, Jr., 62, of Temple, died at his residence Sept. 5, 2002.

Memorial services were held Sept. 9 at Heartfield Funeral Home in Belton with Rev. Bobby Ellis offi­ciating. The body was cre­mated and the ashes will be scattered at a later date.

Satterwhite was born in Longview to Martin W. and Clara Cell Capps Sat­terwhite on Oct. 31, 1939. He had been a resident of Bell County most of his life. He served in the U.S. Army in the late fifties and prior to his retire­ment, was employed as a electronic technician with Austin Radio. He was a Baptist.

Survivors include four daughters, Carol Kelley of Salado, Valen Satterwhite of Houston, Ladena Sat­terwhite of Houston and Kathy Satterwhite of Gon­zales; one brother, Donnie Satterwhite of Houston; three sisters, Mary Kadlec of Wisconsin, Billie Chap­man of Corsicana and Clara Fern Edmonds of Henderson; and six grand­children. He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Deborah Satter­white; and two brothers, Earl Satterwhite and Joey Satterwhite.

Salado loses friend In death of Coach Smith

Services celebrating the life of U.G. “Coach” Smith, 81, will be 5:30 p.m. Sept. 5 at Heartfield Funeral Home in Belton with Rev. Skip Blancett officiating. Burial will follow imme­diately after at the Salado Cemetery.

Coach died Sept. 1 at home in his beloved Salado. He was born Ulysses Grant Smith in Dexter, MO, to Charles Judson Smith and Myrta Dyer Smith. He lived and attended school in Urich, MO. After graduating, he joined the United States Army.

Coach received many medals and recognitions while serving his country in the army for over 22 years, but he was most proud of the admiration and loyalty he earned while seeing beside his troops during his many stints in Korea, Japan, and Europe.

After retiring as an officer from the military, Coach eagerly began his life as a teacher and coach. At age 42, he was the oldest enrolled college freshman when he entered The University of Nebraska at Omaha. He coached m Slater, MO and Chadwick Preparatory School in Palos Verdes, CA, before coming to Salado, to begin hi Te a tenure. He left Salado and was principal/coach in Jarrell, TX and Santo, TX before ending his career in Moran, TX.

Coach’s proudest moment was the renam­ing of the Salado High School gym, “The Coach Smith Gym” in recogni­tion of his many years of unwavering support and enthusiastic attendance of all Salado athletics, most particularly girls’ basket­ball.

Coach returned to Salado to begin his last adventure, business. He owned and operated Salado Hardware, Salado Car Wash, Salado Texaco, Rogers Laundry Mat, Bartlett Dairy Queen and his favorite, Salado Dairy Queen. Coach also owned a restaurant in Missouri. He was proud of his membership as a Master Mason as well as a York Rite 32nd Degree Shriner.

Coach was preceded in death by his devoted brother and partner Charles Edward Smith, also sister, Myrta Hill.

Coach is survived by his wife, Lou Ann McQuery Smith, son Dezri Grant Smith, daughter Myrta Ann Hodge and husband Claude, daughter Kathy Lou Rutherford and husband Wayne, and daughter Penny Sue Curry and husband Ron. A brother, Ronald J. Smith of Salado, three sisters, Katherine Louise Melchiorre, Marjorie Sterling Menenhall both of Rohnert Park, CS and Alice Elizabeth “Betty” Smith of Kansas City, MO. Coach leaves behind a living legacy of 15 great-grandchildren who loved their “Pa-Pa” dearly.

Memorials may be made to The Soaring Eagle Scholarship Fund at Salado High School started by Coach Smith to support aspiring young athletes.

Visitation is 6-8 p.m. on Sept. 4. At the funeral home in Belton.

Yarbrough passes away at age 80

Clyde Demar Yarbrough, Sr., 80, of Salado, died at his resi­dence Aug. 26.

Services were held 10 a.m. Aug. 30 at Heartfield Funeral Home in Belton with Rev. Roy Smith offi­ciating. Burial was in the Resthaven Cemetery south of Belton.

Yarbrough was born Oct. 3, 1921 in Aliceville, Alabama to Walter Demar and Lola Mae Mitchell Yarbrough. He attended Mississippi State Univer­sity, where he studied busi­ness. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII as an M.P. at Ft. Benning, Georgia. Following his discharge from the Army, he worked in sales at var­ious levels. He married Elva Fellers on Feb. 6, 1991 in Youngsport. Yar­brough was a member of Lawler Baptist Church and formerly served as a Deacon at Youngsport Baptist Church. He had been a resident of Salado for the past 13 years, moving here from Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

Survivors include his wife, Elva Fellers Yar­brough of Salado; one son, Clyde D. Yarbrough, Jr. of China Spring; two daugh­ters, Marcia Bock ofMem­phis, Tennessee and Nancy Smith of Sturgis, South Dakota; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Betty La Vernce Russell Yarbrough in 1990 and a sister, Gladys Kline.

Cromer passes away after battle with cancer

Stephen Lee Cromer passed away on Aug. 9 after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
Grave side services were held on 10 a.m. Aug. 13 at Salado Cemetery.

Cromer was born July 28, 1948 in New Orleans, Louisiana. Before the age of two, he traveled to Kodiak, Alaska where his career Navy father was sta­tioned. When the Korean conflict began, his father was ordered to sea and Steve and his mother returned to her family home in Houston. When his father retired from the Navy, Steve moved with his parents to Huntsville, Texas where he attended high school and Sam Houston State Univer­sity. In 1971, he returned to Houston and became asso­ciated with a large interna­tional medical equipment company. For the next 20 years, he worked in the medical equipment and supply field.

He was predeceased by his father, Emmette L. Cromer, his grandparents Ruth Berry Brown and Ste­phen Arthur Brown, and his uncle Charles Stephen Brown.

Cromer is survived by his mother, Jean Brown Cromer Higginson and his fiancee, Lisa Evans. He is also survived by his brother George David Higginson and wife, Cori, and nephew Joseph Mercer Higginson of Waco; his aunt Ann Par­sons and husband Kit of Waco; cousins, Mary Lou Rohan and husband Ken­neth and their children Elizabeth, Melinda and John; Terri Allison and her husband Randall and their children Kristen, Tegan and Charles Brian; Grant Dudley and wife Teresa and their children Sarah, Megan and Mat­thew. Also, his extended family, Lisa’s son Paul and his wife Tammy and their daughter Hannah Elizabeth. He is also sur­vived by his three best friends, Dennis Krisch, Steve Warner and Tami Spain.

Lewis passes away at age 68

Services for Billy Lewis Hyer, 68, of Belton, were held Aug. 12 in the Heart­field Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Billy Johnson officiating. Burial was in the north Belton ceme­tery.
Hyer died Aug. 8 at his residence.

He was born on March 30, 1934 in Belton to Odell and Corinne Digby Hyer. Hyer graduated from Belton High School in 1951 and served in the United States Army in the early 1950’s. He married Judy Scates-Doughty on April 23, 1982 in Belton. Hyer retired from the engineering department at Scott and White Hospital in 1997. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Belton.

Survivors include his wife, Judy Hyer of Belton; two sons, Todd Hyer of Belton and Bill Doughty of Round Rock; two daugh­ters, Julie Turner of Ft. Worth and Jan McGuire of Belton; one brother, Mack Hyer of Rosanky, Texas; and nine grandchildren.

Visitation was held Aug. 11 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Heartfield Funeral Home in Belton.

Holland passes away at age 88

Services for Sadie Lou Holland, 88, of Salado, were Aug. 2 at Heartfield Funeral Home with Rev. Skip Blancett and Rev. Joe Bentley officiating. Mrs. Holland was buried at Salado Cemetery. She died July 30 at a Temple hospital.

Sadie Lou Holland was born in Belton to Clinton Lighter and Eunice Irene Solomon Jones. She grad­uated from Temple High School.

She married Ellis White Holland in 1934 and moved to Salado. She was a member of the Salado First United Meth­odist Church, where she was actively involved in the United Methodist Women and the Salado Monday Club. She was a past member of the Salado Village Artists and an honorary lifetime member of the Salado Ladies’ Auxiliary. She was the Grand Marshall for the First Annual Salado Christmas Parade.

Mrs. Holland was pre­ceded in death by her husband, Ellis White Hol­land, by an infant daughter, Alma Lucilll:, and a brother, Ferrell Jones.

Survivors include her daughter Weeta Evans, of Salado; two grand-daugh­ters, Angelyn Schuster, of Salinas, CA, and Erika Shampo, of Lafayette, LA, and five great grand­children.

Utley passes away at age 78

Frances Mean Utley was born in Belton, TX on June 8, 1924. She was the daughter of Victor Rather Means and Ola Mae Means. She graduated from Belton High School in 1941 and attended the University of Mary Har­din-Baylor. She married Robert Kelley Utley, Jr. on March 15, 1944.

Mrs. Utley was a Real­tor in the area for 15 years, serving as president of the Temple-Belton Board of Realtors in 1981. She was organist at the First Presby­terian Church in Belton for 22 years and an Elder in the Church. Most recently, she was co-owner and presi­dent of Salado Galleries in Salado for 20 years.

Mrs. Utley’s husband, Kelley Utley, preceded her in death he 1s survived by a on, Robert K. Utley, Ill and wife Ann Utley of Dallas; a daughter, Mar­garet Ann. Wright and husband Larry Wright of Morgan’s Point; a son, David Utley of Turlock, CA; a sister,. Gloria Means Woodall and husband James Woodall of College Station, a brother, Victor Rather Means, Jr. and wife Peggy Means of Salado; a grandson, Steve Utley and wife Melissa Utley of Dallad; a grandson, Brian Utley and wife Beth Utley of Austin.

A private family graveside service will be held in Belton. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. July 9 at the First Presbyterian Church in Belton. Judy Lijestrand, David Duncan and Thomas Allen will be officiating.

Visitation will be 7 – 9 p.m. July 8 at Heartfield Funeral Home in Belton.

Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church of Belton or a memorial of one’s choice.

Jack Stallings passes away June 9

Jack D. Stallings, age 80, of Salado died June 9 at his residence.

He was born July 6, 1921 in Batesville, Arkansas, the son of Jacob and Minnie Harris Stallings.

Survivors are two daughters: Peggy Piatt, of Salado, and Bynah Whit­tenborn, of Katy, Texas. Two sons: George Thomas Stallings of Albuquerque, New Mexico and Jack David Stallings, of St. Igna­tius, Montana.

He also leaves behind one sister, Elaine Wilson, of Fairland, Oklahoma, six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Private service will be held at a later date. Harper­-Talasek Funeral Home of Salado in charge of arrangements.

Jones dies at age 56.

Graveside services for Linda D. Jones age 56, of Salado, were held 3 p.m. June 8 at the Salado Ceme­tery with Reverend Bobby Ellis officiating.

Jones died June 5 in a Temple nursing center.

She was born on August 25, 1945 in Harris County to Norman Thomas Balla­tin and Doris Mac Hughes. She received . her associ­ated degree in accounting from Temple College and was raised as a member of the J.L. Gidley family. Jones was a member of the Prairie Dell Baptist Church. Jones was pre­ceded in death by two husbands, Lloyd Donald Landrum in 1966, and Wil­liam Lee Jones in 1990, and one brother.

Survivors include one son, two daughters, two brothers: Ellis Stewart of Bangor, Maine and Jimmie Gidley of Salado. She also leaves behind a sister, Sheryl Yauk of Temple, and four grandchildren.

Rodriguez passes away May 28

Jose R. Rodriguez, 67, of Little-River Academy died in a Temple hospital May 28.

Memorial services was held June 1 at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Temple with Minister Jose Rodriguez, Jr. officiating. The body was cremated and burial will be at a later date.

Rodriguez was born to Agripin and Julia DeLeon Rodriguez in Benavides, TX on June 2, 1934.

He has been a resident of Little-River Academy for the past year, moving from Belton where he had resided for 25 years. He owned Rodriguez and Sons Painting Company. He was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Temple.

Survivors include his wife, Eva Garcia Rodriguez, of Little River Academy; mother Julia Rodriguez of Belton; two sons, Abel Rodriguez of Little River-Academy and Jose Eliberto Rodriguez, Jr. of San Juan, Puero Rico; four brothers, Raul Rodriguez of Waco, Crispin Rodriguez of Temple, Agripin Rodriguez, Jr. of Salado and Johnny Rodriguez of Belton; five sisters, Alicia Contreras of Sorpus Christi, Julie Martinez of Lubbock, Bernards Bedlin of Belton, Margaret Reyes of Temple an dd Gloria Garsa of Belton; he also leaves behind two grandchildren.
