John Scott Denison passes away May 16

Services for John Scott Denison, 83, of College Station and formerly of Salado, were May 21 at Memorial Funeral Chapel in College Station.

The Rev. Phillip McLarty of the First Presbyterian Church of Bryan officiated. Burial followed in the College Station Cemetery.

Denison died May 16 in the Scott and White Hospital in Temple.

He was born in Waco June 18, 1918 and received a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from New Mexico State University and a master’s degree from Texas A&M Uni­versity. He was director of the Electric Power Institute and was retired as a professor of elec­trical engineering at Texas A&M. He was a member of the Texas and National Society of Pro­fessional Engineers and the Institute of Electri­cal & Electronic Engi­neers. He also was a member of the National Education Committee and the Power Society.

He served on the Pres­ident’s Faculty Advisory Committee and was chairman of the Planning Committee for the Conference for Protective Relay Engineers and the University Util­ities Advisory Commit­tee. He was on the planning committee for the Annual Municipal Electric Short School, the Power Distribution Conference at the Uni­versity of Texas and was responsible for the Annual Short Course for Electrical Metermen.

He received the outstanding faculty award, “Engineer of the Year” Brazos Chapter, the Convair Award and the IEEE Centennial Medal. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II and was a Presbyterian.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Carla Denison White.

Survivors include his wife, Minta “Doll” Denison of College Station; a son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Lina Denison of Richmond; a brother and sister-in-law, Mac and Eddie Denison of Waco; a sister, Jane McLendon of Little Rock, Ark. and three grandsons.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Electrical Engineering Department at Texas A&M University, College Station, Texas 77843-3128, to the Texas Lions Camp, P.O. Box 247, Kerrville, TX 78029 or to a charity of choice.

Stevens passes away at May 3

Donald Bernard Stevens, 75 of Salado died May 3, 2002, at his residence. A memorial service was held May 6, at Harper Talasek Funeral Home of Salado with Rev. Joe Bentley officiating.

Donald Stevens was born July 21, 1926, in Baltimore, Marland, to Joseph James Stevens and Ethel Maud Stevens. He was a Detective in Baltiomre. Mr. Sevens was a member of the Baltimore Retired Police Benevolent Association, a lifetime member of the VFW-4008 and served in the navy from 1944-1946. He was preceded in death by his wife, Agnes in 1996. Stevens was a resident of Salado for the past 24 years.

He is survived by son Charles H. (Chuck) Gehart and wife Helen of Salado, TX; sisters Ruth Franklin and Shirley Doda of Baltimore, Maryland; grandsons Charles Gerhart and wife Vicky of Salado, Donald Gerhart and wife Amanda of Round Rock and great grand-daughter Summer Gerhart.

Barker passes away in his residence April 4

Roger Stewart Barker, age 65, died April 2 at his residence in Salado. Funeral services were held at Salado United Method­ist Church April 4 with Rev. Grady Brittain, Rev. Skip Blancett and Rev. Joe Bentley officiating. Mr. Barker was interred in Salado Cemetery.

He was born June 21, 1936 in Athens, Ohio, the son of A.B. and Elma White Barker. He was graduated from Texas A&M University. Mr. Barker served in the U.S. Marine Corp.

He married Joyce K. Hunter on August 28, 1961 in Alice, Texas.

He lived in Salado for 31 years.

He was a member of Salado United Methodist Church.

Survivors are his wife, Joyce K. Barker, of Salado; two sons, Roger Neil Barker, of Killeen and Randolph (Randy) Barker, of Belton; a daughter, Dianna Lynn Zulauf, of Salado, and seven grand­children.

He is also survived by two sisters, Frances B. Bentsen and Evelyn B. Gilley, both of Dallas.
Memorial donations may be made to Salado United Methodist Church or the charity of the giver’s choice.

Gibson passes away at age 89

Services for Ray Gibson, age 89 were held April 9 at the First Baptist Church in Temple. Rev. Jerry Carlisle officiated. Burial followed at Bell­wood Memorial Park. Gibson died April 6 in a local hospital.

Ray Gibson was born October 17, 1912 in Watt, Texas to William H. and Rhoda Gunn Gibson. He was a graduate of Waco High School.

He is a former member of the Temple Kiwanis Club and the Salado Rotary Club. Mr. Gibson was a member of the fellowship class and a member of the First Bap­tist Church in Temple for 62 years. He served on the board of directors at Merit Seating m Temple and at People at’I Bank, Belton for more than 20 years.

Survivors are wife Inez A. Gibson and son Jerry Gibson, both of Temple.

He is also survived by seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Duerr passes away in his home

Daniel D. Duerr, age 45, of Salado, died March 2, 2002 at his home follow­ing a long illness. He was born December 24, 1956 in Paris, Arkansas.

Duerr graduated from Bishop Kelly High School, Tulsa, OK. m 1975 and the University of Central Texas in 1989. Mr. Duerr served in the Air Force and was later employed by U.S. Civil Service in the sev­eral aviation-related positions. At Fort Hood he was a member of the Apache Fielding Team and was an Aviation Test Officer at OTC when he medically retired in 1998.

Mr. Duerr is survived by his wife, Karen Duerr of Salado, three daughters, Sonya Duerr of Arlington, Rebecca Dix of Bedford, and Shannon Snyder of Bedford; his mother, Mary Rita Duerr of Ft. Smith, Arkansas : two brothers, Tom Duerr of Elicott City, Maryland and Bob Duerr of Plano; and his grandpar­ent Mr. and Mrs. Justin Duerr of Subiaco, Arkansas. He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph.

The funeral mass was held 11 a.m. March 5. Mr. Duerr was cremated. Harper-Talasek Funeral Home of Salado was in charge of arrangements.

Glasscock, 61, passes away at her residence

Nancy Walker Glasscock, age 61, of Salado, died February 19 in her residence. Memorial services were held February 23 at the Salado home of Nancy Walker Glasscock.

Nancy Walker Glasscock was born on August 9, 1940 in Temple. She was the daughter of the late C.L. “Chick” Walker Jr. and Iladene Madeley Waler. She attended school in Temple and graduated Temple High School in 1958. She graduated with honors and received a Teaching Certification from Mary Hardin Baylor University.

She is survived by one son, David Dale Glasscock, Jr. of Salado; two daughters, Shelley Wood and Janet Shirley of California; and one sister, Elizabeth A. Walker of Houston.

Howard dies at age 88

Clyde C. Howard Sr., 88, died Feb. 22 at a Killeen nursing home .Services were held Feb. 23 at Salado Church of Christ with Minister Dempsey Stripling officiating. Burial followed at Salado Cemetery.

Clyde was born September 3, 1913 in Ft. Worth to Clyde C. And Martha N. Wise Howard. He was a salesman for Reed and Barton Silver Company for 30 years. Howard also served in the U.S. Army. Clyde was a former member of Salado Church of Christ, Salado Lions Club and was currently a member of Killeen Church of Christ.

He was preceded in death by his white Inez Vivian Howard, in 1991.

Survivors are sons, Wayne Howard of Houston; Clyde Howard Jr. of Belton; grandchildren, Chris ,Paul ,Andrea; and a sister, Mrs. Ton “Sue” Moore of Stillwater, OK.

Copeland dies February 15

Bernice G. Copeland, 96, of Salado died Feb. 15, 2002.

Funeral services were held Feb. 18, at Heartfield Funeral Home in Belton with Rev. Tommy Davis officiating. Burial was at the Salado Cemetery.

Bernice Copeland was born to Rayth and Sophronie Griffin McQueen in Bell County on April 5, 1905. She was a lifelong resident of Bell County. Prior to her retirement, she was employed with Stagecoach Inn in Salado and was also a Avon sales representative for many years. She was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene in Belton.

Survivors include one son R.L. Copeland of Salado; one daughter Elsie Nell Cromeans of Belton, 8 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter. She was preceded in death by her husband Harvey H. Copeland on May 4, 1962, one son Harvey H. Copeland, Jr. on Feb. 1, 1978; three brothers and two sisters.

Haddock passes away at age 47

Stephen Haddock, age 47, of Leander, died February 3 in a Temple hospital.

Services were held February 6 at Harper Talasek Funeral Home of Salado. Interment followed at the Salado Cemetery.

Stephen was born June 22, 1954 at Cuero, TX. He was a graduate of Lanier High School in Austin. He had worked in the maintenance department at Scoot & White Hospital in Temple, the Breckenridge Hospital in Austin as well as the LBJ Library.

Survivors include his parents Earl and Lena Haddock, of Salado; two sisters, Janice Bint of Arlington, and Faye Engelke, of Seguin; three nieces and one nephew.

Peteete passes away Jan 28

Claribel Northen Peteete, 88, of Belton died January 28 at a Belton care center. Services were held Feb 1 at First Baptist Church with Rev. Brian Dunks, Rev. Billy Johnson and Rev. Sewell officiating. Burial followed at Salado Cemetery.

Claribel was born May 14, 1913, in Deer Lodge, Montana, to Joseph Henry and Susan Ann Gault Queeberry. She married Embry Peteete, in 1946, who preceded her in death in 1984. She worked as a checker at the Fort Hood Commissary.

She is survived by her son Mark Peteete of New Braunfels; stepdaughter Better Corbett of Ft. Worth; and grandchildren, Matt Petite and Laura Petite.
