In a ground-and-pound grudge match, Salado Eagles won their homecoming game against alumnus Alan Haire and his slot T Jarrell Cougars 14-7 tonight.
The Eagles scored on their first drive, after Jarrell deferred to the second half.
Salado drove 53 yards in 10 plays, scoring on a 6-yard run by Luke Bingham with 7:27 left in the first. Townes Sather’s kick made it 7-0 Salado.
The Eagles forced Jarrell to a three-and-out series, taking over at their own 49 yard line with 5:15 left in the first.
Salado then drove 51 yards in 14 plays, scoring on a 4-yard run by Lincoln Hossfeld. Sather made it 14-0 with 11:20 left in the half.
The Cougars scored on a fourth-and-20 on the first of three passes by Jamari Livsey to Ross Vrabel with 3:35 left in the first half. Nic Rodriguez made the score 14-7.
In the second half, Brody Schiller intercepted two Livsey passes to keep Jarrell from scoring, including an interception with 2:44 left to play to secure the win for the Eagles.
The game was marred by penalties as the teams combined for 26 penalties for 149 yards.
The Eagles had 179 yards on the ground on 25 attempts. The Eagles were 9-of-14 in the air for 80 yards.
Jarrell had 139 yards rushing on 28 attempts. The Cougars had 26 yards passing on three attempts with two interceptions.
