Barring a collapse against the bottom of the district tonight and Tuesday, Salado Eagles varsity baseball team is the likely District 25-4A Champion.
The Eagles scored seven runs with two outs in the third to overtake a four-point lead by the Burnet Bulldogs April 21 in a game that was rescheduled and moved to Georgetown Easte View due to threatening weather earlier this week.
Salado went on to win the game 9-5 as Burnet added a run in the fourth.
The onslaught came after flyouts to deep center and right fields by Chase Basham and Cody Wolf.
Jacob Wilk singled. He advanced on a single by Grant Taylor. Ryan Dunnahoo walked to load the bases and a walk issed to Garret Lightfoot scored Wilk and kept the bases loaded.
Drew Dobbins singled to score a run. Phillip Ellis was hit by the pitcher, driving in the third run of the game. Preston Payne reached on a fielding error on his shot to deep right field, scoring two runs. Ellis got caught in a hot box between third and home but was able to get back to third and later scored.
An errant throw from the shortstop to first base allowed Chase Basham to get to second base and Payne to score the final run of the inning.
Burnet took the early lead in the game scoring two runs in both the first and second innings. Salado closed the gap to 4-2 in the bottom of the second. Grant Taylor was hit by the pitcher and Dunnahoo walked. Taylor went to third on a passed ball . A single to deep left scored Taylor and Dunnahoo scored on the throw.
Wolf got the win on the mound for the Eagles, pitching six innings. He struck out 10 batters, and gave up five hits and four unearned runs.
