Salado Eagles varsity soccer lost to their district opponent Gatesville Hornets in the Championship of the Salado Eagle Soccer Classic Jan. 24, after shutting out Cameron Yoe and Wimberly.
Salado beat Cameron Yoe 6-0 in the first round, led by John Dawson, who scored three goals. Daniel Magadon scored a goal and had an assist, Costas Loullis scored a goal on a pently kick and Christian Martinez scored a goal, Kaden Smein and Brandon Rodriguez both contributed assists in the match.
The Eagles beat the Wimberly Texans 3-0 in the second round of the tournament,. Dawson scored all three goals for Salado. Martinez had two assists and Smein had one. Cameron Markham led the Eagles defense in the shut out win.
Salado could not get a kick past the goalie in the 1-0 Championship game loss to the Gatesville Hornets. Defenders were Smein, Markham and Camden LaCanne.
“This is an extremely talented group of players, and they are learning to work together in order to produce results,” Coach Michael Goos said of the 4-4 Salado team.
Prior to the tournament, the Eagles lost to China Spring 1-0 on Jan. 20. Scout Pucket led the team in the game at his midfielder position. “ The boys worked hard in the second half to come back from a 1 point deficit. They had many chances on goal,” Goos said, “but could put the finisher in the net.”
Junior Varsity
The JV Boys beat Lampasas on the road 4-2 on Jan. 23. Jacob Foster scored the first goal on an assist from Sam Shearer. Shearer scored the second goal on an assist from Malachi Ward. Edgar Castillo scored on a cross from Jose Olvera and the final goal was scored by Malachi Ward.
The boys were called to participate in the Fourth Annual Salado Eagle Classic when another team was unable to attend. The first game seven Salado JV boys joined five Jarrell varsity players in a 4-1 loss. The sole score was from a cross from Jose Olvera to a Jarrell player. The second game, against Cameron Yoe varsity resulted in a 2-1 victory with Manuel Tonches scoring two goals for Salado, one with an assist from Nolan Maldonado.
The Salado JV Boys traveled to Gatesville Jan. 26 to dominate the Hornets for a 2-0 victory.
Sam Shearer scored the first goal on a corner kick from Manuel Tonches within the first 10 minutes of play and within another five minutes, Shearer intercepted a goal kick and drove it in for his second goal of the evening. The scoring streak ended and Salado had difficulty finding the back of the net for the rest of the evening despite many more shots on goal against Gatesville. The victory is the JV Boys 15th of the season. Salado will play Gatesville again Feb. 2 in Salado.
