For more than four hundred years we have been honing a hypothesis about the peopling of the Americas and teaching it in schools – that 13,500 years ago people from Asia followed mammoth into the New World both populating this hemisphere while driving 37 species of animals into extinction. There have always been researchers who doubted this tale and for over 20 years we have known with certainty that it just doesn’t fit the data. The process of the peopling of the Americas is different from that still taught in elementary schools and also much more complex. The Gault Archaeological Site in Central Texas, with occupations as early as 20,000 years ago, provides us with a unique and important glimpse at both the earliest peoples in the Americas as well as their descendants.
