Services for James R. Griffitt , 87, will be at 10:00AM on Monday, April 29 at Salado Church of Christ. Reverend Joseph Keyes will be officiating.
James R. Griffitt died on April 25, 2013 at the age of 87, in Salado, TX.
James was born March 18, 1926 in Bailey, Texas. He attended Bailey High School where he was a star member of the Bailey Bulldogs basketball team. He received a Bachelor of Science degree from Sam Houston State University and a Masters of Science from East Texas State University (now Texas A&M Commerce). In 1945 he enlisted in the Army Air Corps where he was a Corporal and a radio operator on a B-17 Bomber aircraft.
He met and married Josephine Parris August 24, 1947 in Commerce, Texas.
Prior to moving to Salado, James and Josephine lived in Bonham, Texas where they raised their two daughters. He taught vocational agriculture at Bonham High School, sponsoring the Future Farmers of America, and leading the award winning yearbook staff.
Later he served as Director of the Fannin Center of Grayson County College, helping to establish and expand the Vocational Programs.
His first teaching position was in Ivanhoe, Texas as the North Fannon vocational agriculture teacher.
He was for many years, active in the Bonham Church of Christ, serving as Elder there. Later was a member of the Salado Church of Christ.
Griffitt was preceded in death by his parents, John and LaVera Griffitt, his brothers, Wayne Carnell Griffitt and LaFayne Griffitt. He is survived by his two daughters, Jyl Griffitt Cain, her husband, Randy, Jan Griffitt Middleton, her husband, Robbie.
He is also survived by five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers the family requests contributions be made to Cherokee Home for Children, PO Box 295, Cherokee, TX 76832.
Arrangements are in the care of Broecker Funeral Home, Salado.
