Eagles give up 3 unearned runs in home district loss

The defending state champion Jarrell Cougars knocked Salado out of the top spot in 2A baseball when they squeaked out a 3-2 win, thanks to three unearned runs in the fifth inning of their March 19 district match in Salado.

Neither team scored through the first three innings as Salado pitcher Reagan Bazar found himself with Jarrell runners on every base and just one out in the first. He responded by striking out the next batter and shortstop Marshall Mann took a slow grounder and threw the runner out at first to get out of the inning.

Bazar would get out of the third inning with two runners in scoring position and just one out, but he could not overcome back-to-back errors in the fifth inning that allowed the Cougars three unearned runs and the lead.

After striking out Kyle Marquis and Tyler Krupp, Bazar walked James Klepac and Travis Cockerham singled. Landon Ledbetter then hit a shot to deep center that bounced in and out of Caden Eary’s glove, allowing two runs to score. Ledbetter scored from third on the next play when Salado shortstop Marshall Mann dribbled Morgan Cooper’s grounder for the second error and third unearned run of the inning and game.

Salado had two earned runs, both coming off of the bat of Casey Frazier.

Jon Franz led off the fourth inning with a double and Cole Haag popped up to shallow center for the first out. Frazier took a 1-1 pitch and drove it almost to the center-field fence, scoring Franz and earning a double. Frazier was tagged out sliding into third base when he tried to leg the double into a triple, but his shot gave Salado its only lead of the game.

Frazier led off the final at-bat for Salado by taking another 1-1 pitch and sending it over the fence to bring Salado to within a run.

Jarrell was able to end the inning and the game to give the Eagles their first district loss.

Both teams had five hits in the game.

In the loss on the mound Bazar struck out 11 batters, allowed five hits. The Eagles defense gave up three unearned runs.

Salado is 2-1 in district while Jarrell has struggled to a 1-2 record in the early part of district.

Salado 19

Rosebud-Lott 0

Salado Eagles crushed Rosebud-Lott 19-0 on March 15 with Casey Frazier and Cody Proctor allowing only two runners on base.

The Eagles scored five runs in the first inning, with three hits. Trey Mohler led off with a walk and stole second and third base before scoring on a single by Frazier. Marshall Mann reached on a walk and Cole Haag hit a single to score both runners.

Coby Giniewicz singled with one out, scoring Haag who had stolen second and third. Giniewicz stole second and scored on an error by the shortstop.

Salado added eight runs in the second. Britton Hawes reached on an error by the third baseman, as did Mohler. Mann reached on an error by the second baseman, scoring Hawes.Jon Franz singled, scoring Mohler and Mann. Haag doubled to score Franz. Frazier knocked in Franz with a single. Giniewicz and Martin singled to load the bases. A walk to Davis Little scored Franz. Mohler walked in his second at-bat, scoring Giniewicz. Frazier walked in his second at-bat, pushing Ginietiz across before the final out was recorded.

In the fourth, Salado tacked on five runs. Little led off with a single. Hawes walked and Caden Eary doubled to score Little. Frazier singed and Reagan Bazar walked to score Hawes and load the bases. Frazier singled to score two runners and Giniewicz singled to score a runner. 

Mohler hit a triple in the fifth inning, scoring on a sacrifice by Mann,

Frazier got the win on the mound, pitching four innings and facings 14 batters. He allowed one hit and struck out seven batters. Proctor faced four batters in the fifth, allowing one hit and striking out two batters.

Lexington 1

Salado continued its run through district opponents last week, defeating Lexington 7-1 in a home game.

Lexington had a short-lived 1-0 lead in the second inning, ending when Salado scored three runs in the third.

With two outs in the inning, Marshall Mann walked as did Jon Franz. An error by the shortstop allowed Cole Haag to reach second and Mann and Franz to score. Haa scored on a single by Casey Frazier, who was left on base.

The Eagles added two runs in the fifth, again after two outs and empty bases. Martin reached when the third baseman threw Frazier out at second for the second out. He stole second base and Britton Hawes walked. Reagan Bazar walked, loading the bases. A single by Caden Eary scored Martin and a walk to Trey Mohler scored Hawes.

In the sixth, Salado scored two runs. Franz led off with a single and scored on a double by Haag. Haag scored on a single by Frazier.

Bazar earned the win for Salado, pitching the entire game and facing 29 batters. He allowed four hits and one run. He struck out 13 batters.

Lexington JV 0

Salado JV Eagles shut out Lexington in a home game March 12 14-0.

Basham pitched the game for the win, striking out seven batters. Only one batter reached base, this on a fielding error.

The JV Eagles scored eight runs in the first inning as four Eagles got hits. Lightfoot and King both had doubles. Payne and Basham had singles.  Scoring runs for Salado were Lightfoot (twice crossing the plate), Payne, Basham, Little, Taylor, Deal and King. 

With two outs in the third inning, Salado added three runs, scoring Snyder, Basham and Little on singles by Wolff and Taylor. Little, Wolff and Taylor all had singles in the inning.

Salado shut-out Rosebud-Lott 17-0 March 15 as  pitcher struck out 10 batters.

The Eagles scored two runs in the first and four runs in thes econd inning. They added 11 runs in the third inning, but went scoreless in the fourth and fifth.
