Salado Lady Eagles lost to Boerne 4-2 in the Region Finals on April 11 at Sharyland Stadium in McAllen, just their second loss of the year, ending an historic season for the soccer team.
Forward Annie Ewton scored a goal for the girls as did her sister, Outside midfielder Katey Ewton. Forward Sara Wilkerson gave an assist.
“This has been an amazing season because the girls made history with their run in playoffs,” Coach Karen Ewton said. “These girls are incredibly dedicated, and something really special happened this year to make them more than a team. When they play, you can see their commitment to one another.”
Next season started on the bus ride home from McAllen “The girls began to plan for next year,” Coach Michael Goos said. “There is a lot of character in this group, and it will be exciting to see how they build on this season’s success.”
China Saxton led the girls past Rockport Fulton in the Regional Semifinal game April 10, scoring the first goal of the 2-0 win from her attacking midfielder position.
Wilkerson scored the second goal of the game. Outside Midfielder Jessica Ringstaff gave an assist in the game.
“I’m really proud of how we performed in this game,” Saxton said. “We stayed aggressive and were tactically aware of what we needed to do the entire time. While goals are attributed to one person, it is really the actions of all 11 players that resulted in our win.”
The girls ended their season at 25-2. During the season, they scored 104 goals on their opponents. They are also the first soccer team to win a District Championship.
The Salado girls team is coached by Michael Goos and Karen Ewton.
