Salado Lady Eagles volleyball season came to an end in Bastrop on Nov. 2 when the girls lost to La Vernia in the first round of the playoffs in a four-set match.
La Vernia won the first set 25-20 and the second set 25-17 before Salado rallied to win the third set 25-17.
In a hard-fought fourth set, La Vernia held on for a 26-24 edge to get to the second round of the playoffs where they will face the winner of the Needville Wharton match. Needville is the first place team from District 27-4A and Wharton is the fourth place team from District 28-4A.
After four years on the varsity team, Cheyenne Vaca led the Lady Eagles in the La Vernia loss with 20 kills at the net. The girls had 46 kills in the match with Tori DeKay recording 10, Malory Schattle recording eight kills, Payton Dreitz, four kills, Meagan Hill, three kills and Brianna Washington, one kill.
Salado had just two service aces with Lindy Martin and Hill each having one.
Schattle and DeKay led the girls in blocking the ball with two each. Also recording blocks were Washington, Vaca and Dreitz.
Salado had 72 digs on defense, lead by Kerrigan Hearne, who had 12 digs. Schattle and Martin had 11 digs each, Hill had 10 digs, Vaca, nine, DeKay, six, Washington, three, and Dreitz, two.
Hill had 44 assists and Kierstan Osborn and Schattle had one each.
The Lady Eagles beat Llano in three straight sets in the final district game last week, winning 25-14, 25-19 and 25-12.
Salado’s offense had a terrific performance with the girls recording 12 service aces. Malory Schattle and Cheyenne Vaca each had five aces while Kerrigan Hearne and Lindy Martin had one kill each.
The girls also had 30 kills at the net, led by Vaca who had 10. Also recording kills were Schattle, seven, Tori DeKay, six, Payton Dreitz, four, Meagan Hill, two and Brianna Washington, one.
Washington had the only block for the defense in the match.
Vaca led the squad with 11 digs, followed by Hill and Schattle, eight each, Hearne and Kierstan Osborn, six digs each, Lindy Martin, three digs and Washington and DeKay, one dig each.
Hill had 28 assists while Osborn and Schattle had one each.
