Salado Lady Eagles started the softball season with a demonstrable win over the Jarrell Lady Cougars Feb. 19, getting 13 hits and 12 runs and holding the Cougars to three runs on four hits.
Meagan Hill got the win on the mound for the Lady Eagles. She faced 20 batters, striking out 10 of them. Jarrell scored two runs in the second on a fielding error on Katriana Fojtik’s shot to right field. C. Martinez and Renae Bruce both scored on the error.
Jarrell added another run in the fourth inning. Grace Bruner led off with a walk and went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Hope Arnold. She scored on a two-out single by Fojtik.
Hill threw just 91 pitches in the complete game appearance, of which 62 were strikes and 29 were balls. She walked two.
Lead-off batter Malory Schattle led the Lady Eagles offensive attack, going three-of-four at the plate. She had two singles and an RBI triple to deep center.
Schattle led off the bottom of the first with a single, stealing second base and going to third on a passed ball. She scored on a shot to right field by Jenna Calder, who took advantage of a fielding error and reached second base. Calder went to third on a passes ball and scored on a single by Rebbecca Dockray before Jarrell could record the first out. Bailey Tindell knocked the runner with a single to center field. Payton Dreitz singled, but runners were left at the corners before the final out was recorded.
Salado went scoreless in the second inning, but increased their lead to 4-2 in the third. Madeline Murray singled to start the frame and stole second. She scored on a single by Dreitz to centerfield. Salado left runners at second and third.
The Lady Eagles added four more runs in both the fourth and fifth innings.
Stephanie Mancilla doubled to lead off the bottom of the fourth. Schattle singled and Calder hit a triple to score both runners. Dockray hit an RBI single, scoring on a passed ball with one out.
Mancilla led off the bottom of the fifth with a walk, stealing second and scoring on a triple by Schattle to deep center. Calder and Dockray reached to load the bases when Madeline Murray laid down a bunt that scored Schattle and kept the bases loaded. Tindell singled to center, scoring the two runners and ending the game.
