Luther Merton ”June” Brewer, M.D., age 76 of Temple, died Friday, June 14, 2013 at his residence. Services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Monday, June 17, 2013 at Grace Presbyterian Church. Burial will be private. The family will receive visitors after the service at the church.
Dr. Brewer was born on February 2, 1937 to Luther M. Brewer Sr. and Loyce Brewer in Paris, Texas. He graduated as valedictorian from Clarksville High School in Clarksville, Texas. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Texas, where he was a member of the Phi Beta Kappa academic honor society. After college, he earned a Medical Degree from Southwestern Medical School in Dallas and was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha. Dr. Brewer completed his Internal Medicine training and a chief resident year at Parkland Hospital in 1965. After completing medical school, Dr. Brewer served as chief of pulmonary disease at Wilford Hall, U.S. Air Force Hospital, San Antonio.
Dr. Brewer worked at Scott and White Hospital from 1967 until 1995. During his tenure, he guided the creation of many programs at Scott & White, which are now essential to the institution’s success. He helped establish the Scott & White Community Internal Medicine Division in 1975, and served as its director until 1980. Additionally, he served as program director for the Internal Medicine Residency Program from 1974 to 1980. He also served on the Scott & White Clinic Board of Directors from 1979 to 1993.
Under the leadership of Dr. Brewer, the Scott & White Health Plan was established and grew to a significant regional entity. By the time he retired from Scott & White in 1995, the Health Plan had increased in size to include more than 107,000 members and became one of the largest pre-paid health care systems in the nation.
Dr. Brewer was a faithful volunteer all of his life. He served as President of the Salado Chamber of Commerce and President of the Salado Public Library District Board. He was a driver for Meals on Wheels and a member of Grace Presbyterian Church in Temple for over 40 years.
Dr. Brewer was preceded in death by the love of his life, Marilyn Reveley Brewer and grandson Isaac Luther Brewer. Dr. Brewer is survived by his three children, Chris Brewer, his wife Robyn and their four children Abigail, Elizabeth, Rebecca, and Derek of Ann Arbor, Michigan; Nancy Brewer Flores, husband Joe and their daughter Susana, of Houston, Texas; and Tim Brewer, wife Shari and their three children, Erin, Clay, and Melanie of Beaumont, Texas. He is also survived by brother-in-law Michael Reveley and his sons, Colin and Tom Reveley, all of England.
The family would like to thank many friends of Dr. Brewer who supported him over the last year, particularly Dr. Charles David Morehead, Dr. Paxton Howard, Dr. Jack Eberts, Dr. John Leadbeater, and Johnny and Sally Gray. During the last year of his life, he enjoyed the loving companionship of Doris Lange.
