Teams will play in double header at Waco ISD Stadium
Girls face Waco University, boys face Mexia
Salado Soccer teams both qualified for the playoffs and will play in a double-header Tuesday, March 25th at the Waco ISD Stadium.
The boys are District Champions after a 4-1 win over the Gatesville Hornets on March 18. The girls secured fourth place with a win over the Gatesville Lady Hornets.
The girls will face Waco University at 5:30 p.m. March 25. The boys are slated to play at 7:30 p.m. that night against Mexia, the fourth place team from District.
Admission to the games is $5 for adults and $3 for students.
“This was a vital win for the boys,” Coach Michael Goos said, “because it secured the district championship.”
The senior Eagles were honored at the last home game March 18: Daniel Lemus, Chase Crenwelge, Tristan Bragg, Josh Rogers, Jack Riley, Tyler Hubbs, Clayton Cole, James Svadlenak, Mason Price, Dennie Barker, and Brad Cosper.
“These are the founding members of Salado High School soccer, and winning the district championship attests to their perseverance, pride, and persistence,” Goos said. “I am proud of all of the players on the Salado Eagle Soccer team. It is an honor to be their coach.”
Outstanding players of the game were Tristan Bragg, forward, one goal; Chase Crenwelge, outside midfielder, one goal; Brad Cosper, forward, one goal, Cameron Markham, outside midfielder, one goal.
The boys finish the regular seasion with a 16-5 overall record, 8-2 in district.
Lady Eagles beat Gatesville
Salado Lady Eagles beat the Gatesville Lady Hornets 7-0 in their final home game on March 18, qualifying for the playoffs.
Sara Wilkerson, forward, scored two goals. Annie Ewton, outside midfielder, scored tow goals. China Saxton, forward, one goal. Katey Ewton, midfielder, one goal. Kierstan Osborne, outside midfielder added a goal.
“After honoring senior defender Anissa Peralta at Senior Night, the girls went on to generate seven goals for the big win they have searched for all season,” Coach Karen Ewton said. “They looked sharp on the field, using crisp passing to create several scoring opportunities.”
The girls finished the season 10-11 overall and 4-6 in district as the fourth place team.
JV Boys beat Gatesville 6-2
The Salado Boys JV team played Gatesville in their final season game in Gatesville on March 17, winning the game 6-2.
Daniel Magadan scored 3 goals and had 2 assists, carrying the Eagles to victory. Joel Murillo, Ryan Cook and Eduardo Jiminez each contributed a goal to cushion the Eagle victory with Joel Murillo, Alex Carmona, Sam Shearer and Malachi Ward being credited with an assist. Gatesville scored their 2 goals late in the second half after numerous personnel and position changes were made.
The JV Boys soccer team finished their season with the following record: Overall season record 13-10-3;
Scrimmage Season, 1-4; Preseason Record, 8-8-2; District, 5-2-1.
“The JV team performed extremely well all season given the level of competition they faced,” Coach Earl Bragg said. Their opponents this year included teams from: Copperas Cove, Pflugerville, Marble Falls, Shoemaker, Belton, Waco, Waco University, Killeen, Harker Heights, Gatesville, Temple, Rouse, Liberty Hill and Waco Connally.
JV Girls finish with win
Salado JV Lady Eagles beat the Gatesville Lady Hornets 8-1 on March 17 in Gatesville.
Scoring for Salado were these: Ana Pena—Outside Mid (1 goal); Sam Blank—Outside Back (2 goals); Madison Matsi—Forward (3 goals); Dani Gantenbien—center midfielder (1 goal); Carly Nichols—Defensive Back (1 goal)
“We went into the second half of the game tied 1-1, but the girls really stepped it up and scored seven goals in the second half,” Coach Ewton said. “This is an amazing group of players because they work extremely well together and they are really supportive of each other. Their teamwork shines brightly when they play together.”
The JV girls finished the season with a 7-0 overall record.
