Fort Hood officials have released the name of a Soldier found dead in an off-post residence Oct. 14.
The body of Staff Sergeant Ryan Michael Sullivan, 24, of Grand Rapids, Mich. was discovered by officers of the Killeen, Texas Police Department.
According to an official report, leadership from Sullivan’s unit became concerned when he did not report for duty that morning. After several unsuccessful attempts to contact Staff Sgt. Sullivan by phone, his platoon leader and platoon sergeant went to his home. The landlord and the Killeen police were immediately called to gain entry.
The Killeen Police Department identified a body, later confirmed by the company commander and platoon leader to be Staff Sgt. Sullivan, in the residence.
Staff Sgt. Sullivan entered the military in August 2002 as an infantryman assigned to the 1st Infantry Division, stationed in Vilseck, Germany. Most recently, he was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division on Fort Hood, Texas, where he served as a squad leader.
In 2006, he deployed with the 1st Cavalry Division for the second time in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom Rotation 06-08, where his unit conducted operations in and around Iskandariyah, south of Baghdad. During his 15-month rotation he earned the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Bronze Star Medal, the Iraqi Campaign Medal and the Global War on Terrorism Medal.
He is survived by his mother and father.
According to the Killeen Police Department, detectives are investigating Staff Sgt. Sullivan’s death as a homicide.
