April 14, 2016
Terry E. Sanford, 60, lost his hard fought battle with ALS while in the arms of his wife, Janice Sanford, the morning of April 15, 2016. Terry lived most of his adult life in Sugar Land, but was born on August 11, 1955 in Angleton, Texas to Paul and Patsy Sanford.
The family soon moved to The Central Texas town of Salado, where his mother’s family had lived for three generations. Growing up and working around his father and grandfather’s ranch and feed store, taught Terry the importance of family, and the value of hard work and persistence. Terry graduated from nearby Belton High in 1973, where he excelled in sports and academics. Terry then earned an accounting degree from Sam Houston State in 1977. While in school, Terry’s passion was riding broncs and bulls in the rodeo, where he participated in events all across our country.
Upon graduating from college and getting CPA license, Terry moved to Houston and worked for the Big Eight accounting firm of Coopers & Lybrand. He was soon heading up bank auditing teams and working with companies trying to go public. After working in management with other companies needing his expertise, he took on a position with Carriage Services, where he worked for 15 years, ending his service there as Executive Vice President and CFO. He also worked to receive his MBA with Honors in Finance from the University of Houston. Lastly, he was working to help Arabella Exploration of Midland to go public. During his career, Terry also served as a past President of the Houston Chapter of Financial Executives International.
Terry was an avid sportsman and athlete. From a game of golf to a marathon, Terry enjoyed sporting competition with his friends. And sharing his love on hunting and fishing with his friends or family always brought a smile to his face. On warm days you could often find him in command of his barbecue grill by the pool, while his friends and family enjoyed this special time together. But it is his faith in the Lord which we know will bring him eternal peace and happiness.
Terry was preceded in death by his father, Paul T. Sanford. He is survived by his wife of 22 years, Janice Sanford; sons, Justin Sanford of Cleveland, Texas and Charles Sanford of Houston, Texas; daughter, Ashley Sanford of San Antonio, Texas; stepdaughters, Heather Brown and husband, Jim, Ashley Bieltz and husband, Mike of Sugar Land, and Jana Forastiere and husband, Mat of Over Land Park, Kansas; mother, Patsy Sanford of Salado; brothers, Tracey Sanford and wife, Lisa of Fort Worth and James Sanford of Lockhart; nephew, Casey Sanford; and grandchildren; Caden, Abigail, Jackson, Matthew, Sloan, and Brooks.
