Funeral services for Winifred L. Hawthorne, 88, of Temple, will be held at 10:30 AM Saturday, February 15, 2014, at the Taylor’s Valley Baptist Church with Rev. Jeff Loudin and Rev. Scott Matthews officiating. Burial will follow at the Greathouse Cemetery.
The family will receive friends for visitation Friday (Feb. 14 2014) evening from 6-8 PM at the Dossman Funeral Home.
Mr. Hawthorne was born February 16, 1925 in McDade, Texas the son of William Leston Hawthorne and Ruby (Mobley) Hawthorne. He attended school in Bastrop County. He was a War World II veteran, serving in the U. S. Navy, serving in the Pacific on the transport ship, the USS Hammondsport. He married Virginia Nance September 28, 1946 in Elgin. In 1948, they made their home in Temple. Mr. Hawthorne went to work at the Temple Veterans Hospital where he retired October 12, 1980 after 32 years of service there.
After retirement, Winifred pursued his dream of buying, restoring and selling Model A Fords. He and his wife traveled the country going to swap meets and tradeshows all over the country. In Model A Ford circles all over the country he was given the endearing nickname “The Model A King”
Winifred is survived by his wife of 67 years, Virginia Hawthorne of Temple, two sons and daughters-in-law Jerry Leston Hawthorne and wife Susan of Salado and Gary Lynn Hawthorne and wife Nelda of Georgetown; one sister Melba Baysden of Jacksonville, North Carolina; three grandsons, Andy and wife Julia, Bryan and wife Alycia, Jeremy and wife Michelle, one granddaughter Trichelle Hawthorne. Three great granddaughters Brooklynn, Presely and Braely and best buddy, his dog, Lucy.
