In 19 appearances in his senior year, Salado Eagle pitcher Cody Wolf allowed just 19 runs to be scored, of which only six were earned runs.
In his final appearance on the mound for Salado, pitching the final 2.2 innings in the Eagles’ 3-2 loss to Abilene Wylie in the state 4A finals, Wolf threw 28 pitches, 20 of them for strikes. He gave up no walks, no hits and no runs. He struck out four of the eight batters he faced.
The day before he struck out six of the #3 Robinson Rockets in the semi-final game. He threw 92 pitches over seven innings, allowing five hits and only one run. He walked only one batter. Meanwhile the Eagles bats scored seven runs in the win.
For his stellar performance this year, leading the Eagles to the State Finals, Wolf has been named to the Texas Sports Writers Association First Team All State. He joins Texarkana Pleasant Grove pitcher Calebb Bolden and 4A player of the year Mack Mueller, from State Champion Abilene Wylie as the First Team Pitchers.
Mueller was 12-0 on the year and had a 1.01 earned run average in leading Abilene Wylier to the state title.
Wolf was also perfect on the year, with a spotless 13-0 record and a stingy ERA of 0.400.
In the 105 innings that Wolf was on the mound for the 30-12 Salado Eagles, he gave up 49 hits. He walked 28 and hit 7. He struck out 133 batters, or more than one per inning on the mound.
Wolf faced 410 batters, and threw 1,021 strikes compared to 528 balls. Wolf went through 46 of his innings — almost half of his total innings on the mound — with three batters up and three batters down.
Sophomore pitcher Drew Dobbins received Honorable Mention by the Texas Sports Writers. He made 14 appearances on the mound for Salado with a record of 8-3. He gave up 34 hits and 23 runs, 15 of them earned runs for an ERA of .916. He struck out 63 batters and walked 24. He hit another 11 batters in his appearances. Dobbins threw 589 strikes and 363 balls facing 267 batters.
