Through six innings, Cody Wolf held onto a perfect game against the Lampasas badgers until Braden Terry took Wolf’s second pitch and knocked a hard grounder past Jacob Little to reach first on an error in the Salado Eagles’ 6-0 no-hitter win on March 24.
Wolf then struck out Jason Ayers in four pitches with Ayers watching all three of the strikes blow past him. Eagles third baseman Chase Basham grabbed a grounder by Garret Witcher two pitches later, throwing the runner at out second. Little turned the throw into a double play with Zachary Marsh’s catch at first to beat Witcher ending the game and securing the no-hitter for Wolf, his first as a Salado Eagle.
Wolf threw just 72 pitches and had help from his defense in getting the no-hitter. He struck out 10 batters, including three in a row in the second on just 11 pitches.
In the first, he had help from Little, who scooped up two grounders and made the throw to first. A fly out to Keaton Mims ended the top frame.
In the third, Wolf struck out Hadley Berry, but Barrett Snyder let the third strike get past his glove. He threw the runner out trying to get to first and keeping the perfect game in tact.
Another fly to center was grabbed by Mims and Wolf earned his fourth strike out to end the frame.
Shortstop Jacob Wilk took three grounders in the fourth and threw the batters out trying to reach first.
Garrett Lightfoot caught a fly to deep left and Wolf struck out two more batters to end the fifth frame. Wolf struck out the first two batters in the sixth and Little took a grounder from Braden Allen to end the frame with the perfect game in tact.
Offensively, Salado scored six runs on six hits with Snyder having two hits and 3 RBIs to lead the Eagles batters.
Preston Payne scored the first of his three runs in the game after being hit by a pitch with one out in the second. Snyder was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second before Payne stole third and scored on a sacrifice grounder by Wilk.
Marsh scored in the third inning after hitting a single and advancing on two wild pitches. He scored on a fielders choice to the shortstop by Basham.
Payne scored again in the fourth after walking and stealing second. A double by Snyder, his first of two, brought Payne across home plate.
With one out in the sixth, the Eagles scored three runs. Little walked and advanced on a single by Lightfoot. Little stole third and scored on a single by Payne.
Snyder knocked in both runners with a double, but was left stranded at the end of the frame.
