Lady Eagles go 14-0, start district with win

February 19, 2015 by Tim Fleischer Leave a Comment

With shutouts of Gateway Prep and Robinson, Salado Lady Eagles soccer team extended its win streak to 14 and won the first district game of the year.

“We had a very successful game, and I’m proud of how hard we worked,” Midfielder Julie Craig said of the 7-0 district win over Gateway Prep on Feb. 10. “We were able to work together as a team and we played to the best of our ability, which helped us come out with a win.”

Forward China Saxton led the team scoring two goals and contributing an assist. Craig also scored two goals as did outside midfielder Jessica Ringstaff. Also scoring a goral was outside midfielder Katey Ewton. Contributing assists in the game were defensive midfielder Olivia Sula, two, and forwards Reagan Morreale and Gema Vitalos and Carly Nichols, all with one assist.

Robinson 0 Salado Lady Eagles beat the Robinson Lady Rockets in a non-district game on Feb. 13 to keep a perfect 13-0 record.

Saxton scored the only goal for the Lady Eagles on an assist from Annie Ewton. Goalkeeper Sam Isbell stopped four shots on goal to keep a clean sheet. Kristin Crouch also helped the defense record their shutout of the year.

“I’m very proud of how our team fought against Robinson,” Saxton said. “We connected really well together, and it’s awesome to see how we grow and perform as the season progresses.  I’m excited to be a part of this amazing journey with my best friends.”

“Robinson was a very talented team.  They were looking for a win against us,” Annie Ewton said, “but our defenders were not going to let them pass through.  Our offense was very avid on pushing the goal, and worked hard to keep the ball on their half.  Reagan, China, and I worked well together in order to get the goal, which China sent in from the top of the box, leaving us with a 1-0 win.”

The girls played Harker Heights in a non-district game and then face Jarrell on the road Feb. 20 in a district match.

Junior Varsity Girls

Forward Madison Matsi led the team with two goals and an assist. Outside midfielder Rylie Stewart scored a goal and two assists.  Midfielder Tabith Mazo scored a goal and an assist. Also scoring goals were outside midfielders Ragnhild Bele and London Palmer.

“We played a full roster of determined Gatesville players, and consistently answered every challenge.  They were determined to have a successful game,” Coach Karen Ewton said.

Salado JV girls soccer beat Harker Heights 1-0 in a Feb. 10 home game.

Midfielder Maritza Villafranco scored the single goal on an assist from forward Rylie Stewart. Giving outstanding defense were Caitlyn Foster and Taylor Schoenrock.

“This was a big win for the girls, and it was exciting to see their confidence soar after scoring the goal,” Coach Karen Ewton said.
