The Salado High School Speech and Debate Team competed at the UIL State Congress Meet Jan. 4-5. Prelims were held at the University of Texas and finals were held at the Texas State Capitol, where 360 students competed in the state tournament.
Results are as follows: James Tipton, Medalist, sixth and Laura Ball, Finalist, 13th.
UIL introduced congressional debate in 2014. Since then, Salado High School has won the state championship five times.
The Salado High School Speech and Debate Team will compete next at the Brock UIL Meet on Jan. 21 and the Midway UIL/TFA Meet on Jan. 28. The team is coached by Tim Cook.
Salado Wrestlers medal at CenTex, host Killeen boys
Salado High School’s Wrestling Team had three medalists at the 48-Team CenTex Tournament Jan. 6-7 at Austin’s Delco Center.

Salado varsity Eagles split their non-district basketball games last week, beating Rogers 55-43 and losing to East View, 73-45. The boys will travel to Rockport for the Coach K Tournament Dec. 27-28.

Salado Fire Department responded to a structure fire at 110 N. Main St. at about 4:40 a.m. to find the building completely engulfed in flames. The fire did not spread to other structures on the property, which houses Wild Angels Boutique. The fire fighters were able to save the building next door as flames had spread to the roof and attic of the neighboring property. Main Street was blocked off at the intersections of Thomas Arnold and Blacksmith Rd. Fire Chief Jim Franz told Salado VIllage Voice that he had not yet determined the cause of the fire.

Salado Lady Eagles let an eight-point halftime lead slip through their fingers on the road Dec. 6, falling to the Burnet Lady Dawgs 52-49.
