“I’m too old for this….” Roger Murtaugh in Lethal Weapon, a movie that came out when I was 21 years old.
The fictional character played by Danny Glover was six years younger than me. I was feeling him as I watched the Bryan Rudder Rangers go up 34-0 on my Salado Eagles, a team I have covered since 1988, in less than 18 minutes of play.
But then something happened that this sportswriter has never seen happen before while covering the Salado Eagles.

After 40 years, it looks like Texas coaching legend Tom Westerberg is heading back to his hometown Salado.
Superintendent Michael Novotny told Salado Village Voice that Salado ISD trustees will meet 4:30 p.m. March 4 to hear his recommendation to hire Westerberg as the Head Football Coach of the Salado Eagles, a team he played for as quarterback 40 years ago.

Haire takes Head Football Coach job at Killeen Chaparral High School
Salado Eagle Head Football Coach Alan Haire told his players this morning that he has accepted the position of Athletic Coordinator and Head Football Coach for the new Chaparral High School in Killeen ISD, set to open in the fall.
He leaves his hometown school after six seasons, where he has posted a record of 49-23. His Eagles won District Championships in 2017 and 2020 and were second place in 2021 behind the 4A Div. II State Champions China Spring Cougars.

Salado Eagles had six first team All-District Offensive players and five first team All-District Defensive players on the District 9-4A Div. 2 team which was announced over the winter break after District Champion China Spring won the State Championship.

With 35 seconds left on the clock, Grandview’s Nash Caudle tomahawked the ball out of Salado’s Seth Reavis hands as he was making his way across the goal line to break up what would have lifted Salado over the #4 Zebras, forcing a third down and 18.
