A game which started out looking like a Salado Eagles romp ended up being more like a late-November heavyweight playoff match-up. The Malakoff Tigers, ranked #7 in Class 3A, rallied from a two touchdown fourth quarter deficit to pull out a thrilling 29-27 Double Overtime win over Salado Friday at Panther Stadium in Hewitt.

Drew Bird’s interception of Bryan Rudder quarterback Xavier Ramirez’s pass at the Salado 43 yard line with 5:54 left in the game led to a 38-yard Daniel Chtay field goal with 2:59 left to play, giving the Eagles a 38-28 win on the road.

Salado Eagles looked as if they have been running the spread for years, not mere weeks, dismantling the visiting Battlin’ Billies from Fredericksburg to begin Tom Westerberg’s return to his hometown on a Friday night with fans spilling out of the stands onto the lawn of the venerable Eagle Stadium.
The Eagles sent the Billies home with a 53-17 licking.

Salado Eagles open their football season at home 7:00 p.m. Aug. 26 against the Fredericksburg Battlin’ Billies, a 2021 Region II Finalist in 4A-Div 1.
Salado Eagles travel to Bastrop to scrimmage the #4 El Campo Ricebirds at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 18. The original scrimmage was scheduled against Giddings but was changed when Giddings wanted to make it a three-way scrimmage. The JV and Freshmen teams will scrimmage at 5 p.m.
Salado lined up against the visiting Lampasas Badgers Aug. 12, scoring on three of their possessions and stopping the Badgers first team on all of their possessions.

Three penalty calls ended the Salado Eagles’ season in the bi-district round of the playoffs, where they lost to the passing attack of the Rusk Eagles, 49-42, aided a great deal by the 12 flags thrown against them for 92 yards in penalties.
Salado Eagles secured second place in District 9-4A Division II and another trip to the playoffs with a 77-14 blowout of the visiting Jarrell Cougars tonight.
The win improves Salado’s record to 6-3 on the year and 3-1 in district play.
Salado Eagles ran into a buzzsaw on the road, falling to the China Spring Cougars 48-7 in a District 9-4A contest to fall into second place. The Eagles will look to bounce back when they host the Jarrell Cougars Oct. 29.
